About this deal

One new Champion failed after about five miles so I swapped it for one of the old ones. The following week another one failed so I threw them in the bin and put four new NGK ones in and never had any more trouble. Records indicate jets being done in the '80s on the carb. Car was from the Bay Area and is now in Chicago, so not a ton of altitude difference there. The guy I was dealing with from Champion told me that they had a 10% failure rate straight from production however Denso have given excellent results over the years, not just in std A series engines but in everything from tuned Minors to turbo charged modern performance engines, their platinum plugs are superb, yes they are expensive but will last around 60,000 miles with no noticeable loss of performance. Their iridium plugs are great for turbo cars where there will be very high compression under boost as they generally give a very strong spark. But I won't complain after 9 years of being off the road and "under construction", she finally is drivable

I started my quest for a smooth idle, peppy acceleration, clean oil, clean plugs and decent gas mileage last year. I understand the generally preferred plug for TR5/6s is the NGK BP6ES, but note the BP5ES is specifically for use in lead free head - VUX's head is gas-flowed and unleaded. But coming full circle, you raise an excellent point and I will put in whatever plugs are currently in there and see how she behaves.

Suggest posting a photo of your existing plugs as they came out ... a look at the threads can offer some information about whether you’ve got an appropriate plug. -KB I bought a couple of bp5es to go in numbers 5&6 but still not got round to doing it, also nearly bought a set of the Bosch ones Steve has mentioned but my concern was gapping them correctly as I think they come as 40th but I may be wrong with that. Once this was done, then I spent time fiddling with the timing and vacuum advance and the electric choke setting.

I know it's been a little while since I've posted. The car is here but still in winter storage out in the burbs, so I only get over there every couple of weeks for a little while since the garage isn't heated and it's 40 miles away (better than 2,200, right?). I'll be bringing it up to my place once the salt has been washed off the roads and the temps come up a little.

I consulted NGK in the context of running at altitude (ie Stelvio) and their recommendation was BPR6EIX which is an iridium tipped electrode with a conical shape that they claim provides a better focussed spark. Not tried 'em yet. The proper correlation between NGK and Champion is the question, and at the end of the day the colour ought to govern the choice. I had to get rid of the slop in the distributor, replace the throttle shaft bearings (vacuum leak), power valve, accelerator pump diaphragm , and plastic float (replaced with brass) on my Weber 32/36.

On 6ES, V-Power or Ultimate + Valvemaster, I get occasional cold-start fouling on my PI. On 7ES it was even worse.Varmista saatavuus tekemällä noutotilaus tavarataloon. Noudettavissa 4 h kuluessa. This was very different chemistry from the stuff we get at the pump today. not wanting to ruin the NGK debate...but is no one using Bosch? I am driving 4-point WR78X. Someone once noted such 4-point plugs are a better fit for an engine such as ours...
