MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth. Not quite as extreme! The good news with telephoto glass is that it is fairly easy to avoid pointing them into direct sun because of the more narrow angle of view. Furthermore, if you position it properly, these aberrations can be used to artistic effect. I would summarize this performance as being fairly typical but certain not impressive. We’ll work through the chart results by first looking at distortion and vignette. As of yet there isn’t a correction profile available in Lightroom, but you can use the first generation profile without issue since the two lenses are essentially optically identical (with one caveat that I’ll discuss in a moment!) I will note that I’ve used the AF85 for a few of my YouTube segments and it did a much better job than the AF 35mm in not pulsing in and out of focus, however. I just selected a zone, and when I was in that zone the autofocus was actually quite stable (basically flawless after the Firmware 3.0 update for the a7R3).

We didn't experience too much "hunting", either in good or bad light, with the lens accurately focusing most of the time. It has a quiet focusing mechanism, too, which makes this lens well-suited to video recording.

Ease of Use

I want to thank Samyang for sending me a test retail copy of the lens for review. As always, this is a completely independent review. The opinions here are completely my own. *The tests and most of the photos that I share as a part of my review cycle have been done with the new Sony Alpha 1 which will serve as my benchmark camera for the foreseeable future ( my review here) and the Sony a7IV Samyang AF 85II Build, Design and Handling Chromatic aberration is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software. Globalement le Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art survole la compétition et ne coute que 300 euros de plus que le nouveau Samyang 5 Sample of Photos /Exemples de Photos

There is no hyperfocal distance scale, or hard infinity stop, which is unusual for a lens like this, which uses no low dispersion glass in its optical design. The 85mm f/1.4 lens is a classic focal length, long considered the ideal for portraiture, along with landscapes, close up sports and low light photography. Lenses slightly longer than the standard for a format have also traditionally been the pinnacle of optical quality within a range. Samyang have been building an enviable reputation for quality lenses, first in manual focus, more recently moving successfully into AF and now also encompassing the full frame mirrorless Sony cameras. Let's have a closer look, using the 24MP Sony Alpha A7 III body. The AF 85mm F1.4 FE features a total of 11 glass elements; the ED (Extra Low Dispersion) elements have been incorporated into its precise achromatic design. This design corrects chromatic aberrations, and creates quality results, with peripheral softness also being well-controlled.

In real life , the results obtained are very good, we can however notice sometimes some slight missed focus for walking subjects Manual focus isn't for everyone, but if you have the patience (and work more with subjects that sit still, like mountains and buildings) they can be highly rewarding and good fun to use. Many of Samyang's manual-focus primes have had no electronics at all, thus requiring the aperture to be set manually via the control ring. While this does limit the modes you can use, and cause a dark viewfinder image at narrow apertures, it can be an enjoyably tactile experience that feels like "pure" photography. The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art is the smallest and 2nd in term of weight after the Samyang, 10% smaller than the Sony FE85mm F1.4 GM and 25% lighter The new Samyang has a fast , quiet and precise AF in most cases but it still has occasional issues with eye AF and in burst mode for difficult subjects (see dedicated chapter). The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art has the best autofocus of the 85 F1.4 , very similar to the Sony FE85mm F1.8

Resistance to flare is good but not more than that, you can easily get some flare when facing the sun The scale on the left side is an indication of actual image resolution. The taller the column, the better the lens performance. Simple. Falloff of illumination towards the corners is typical of a fast aperture lens like this. The corners are 2.28 stops darker than the image centre at f/1.4 and visually uniform illumination is achieved by f/5.6. Tip. If the moving distance is long, the camera may shake, so please shoot at a focal length between 35 and 100mm.
