The outer surface of the protective shell adopts a carbon-textured design and a non-slip and scratch-resistant material design which does not fade. To top it all off, there’s also 10W reverse charging, allowing you to use the Edge 30 Ultra as a power bank to wirelessly charge other compatible devices in a pinch. Motorola’s portrait mode implementation adds a very heavy crop to images taking it all the way to a 2x zoom.

Moreover, even in broad daylight, the image has a very noticeable amount of digital noise, lacks detail in areas like foliage, and there’s visible lens distortion in the corners too.

The high noise floor, particularly visible in darker regions, is also alarming and remained a fairly consistent theme across our tests. That said, I did come across a few instances where the phone restarted itself while using the camera app. We’ve taken the Moto Edge 30 Ultra cameras out for a spin to see if Motorola has managed to end the megapixel war once and for all and beat some of the best camera smartphones on the market.Surprisingly, given that it’s one of the banner features, the Edge 30 Ultra’s 200MP camera didn’t end up standing out. The secondary lens handles ultrawide and macro shots, and is more effective with what it sets out to do, managing to maintain colour and contrast, whether it’s broadening the scope or focusing in on a subject. You can improve the exposure by enabling the HDR mode, but this lifting of the brightness comes at the expense of contrast, with a lot of detail lost in the long grass in the image below. Both the iPhone 14 and Xiaomi 12T Pro achieved similar multi-core scores, with the iPhone exceeding the Edge 30 Ultra in the single-core results, but the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and Google Pixel 7 Pro were both left in the dust here. The main lens is competent enough in good light, producing bright, vibrant images with a decent amount of detail. The image of the dessert platter above is suitably bright, but zoom in just a bit, and you’ll observe the complete lack of detail. Looking past the camera setup, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra is a flagship device through and through, with the specs to match (mostly). This makes sense considering the poor level of detail we saw when shooting in the standard wide mode. Rather than a slab of monotonous darkness, the rear panel at least adds some sparkle with a frosted effect that doesn’t look dissimilar to a night sky full of stars.
