One day, a corpse is placed on Ezra's master's anatomical table, but there are too many anomalies and injuries for this man to have died a straightforward death. Ezra raises his concerns with his master, and so begins the murder mystery. New for 2020! Join the 750,000 listeners of the Sawbones Podcast as Dr Sydnee McElroy and her husband Justin humorously discuss centuries of medical myths, mishaps and mayhem, including modern day medicine and pandemics. I continued to be interested in the story because the personality of Catherine/Laura was compelling. She was a strong, willful and intelligent woman with a kind heart. The romance that blooms between Laura (her assumed name after she fled NYC) and the Captain was quite predictable but I guess a love interest always helps sell a story.

That being said, I have a great deal of faith in Justin and Sydnee's ability to write a solid and enjoyable piece of text. I laughed out loud more than just a few times, and I adore that it's formatted to look like a small textbook. Teylor's illustrations were by far the highlight of the entire piece. A sequel to Sawbones set in Revolutionary Paris. Young surgeon Ezra McAdam must hasten to Paris to rescue his friend Loveday Finch and her charge Mahmoud, the Ottoman prince, who have been caught up in the Revolution. On the way, Ezra experiences the war first hand on the battlefields of Northern France, where his surgical skills are in high demand by the beleaguered French army. Meanwhile, in Paris, the guillotine is busy, and the medical world is finding the surfeit of bodies useful to its research into the seat of life. Ezra is not persuaded by the controversial theories of his French colleagues, but his mind is on other matters. Finding Loveday and Mahmoud is proving harder than he had imagined: it would appear that Paris really is the most dangerous place on earth. Ezra’s search takes him from the grand Hotel Dieu to the dark catacombs below the city; from the opulent War Office to the tall, forbidding Conciergerie – the city prison – here he must undertake the most audacious rescue attempt of all. A non-fiction book: The Sawbones Book: The Hilarious, Horrifying Road to Modern Medicine by Justin McElroy and Dr. Sydnee McElroy If these were any other content creators besides the McElroys, there is no way this book would have such a high rating on Goodreads. I understand that folks are enthusiastic to support them - I am too - but such a high rating is extremely dishonest because the construction and editing of the book is so unforgivably flawed. I can't believe someone actually made the decision to ship out the books in this state. It feels like they're taking advantage of the fans' willingness to forgive the creators, and that is bad business. I don't want to give out any major spoilers but I loved the ending. It does get rough for a bit, actually a lot of parts of the book are gruesome. It does all seem like it's going to work out in the end and that's all that matters.Nominated for the Lancashire Children’s Book of the year award‘Roll up! Roll up! To Meet HERO the toughest girl in London Both thought-provoking and accessible, this is an impressive historical adventure.’ www.booktrust.org.uk I wanted Laura rescued. I wanted Sawbones to meet Mr Jones. I didn't care too much what Mark and Harry have to do to bring that about. Sawbones is a medical history podcast, going over the often bizarre things we used to do to cure ourselves, or in some cases still do. The hosts are doctor and her husband, who bring a fantastic mix of fun and knowledge to each episode. When I heard they were releasing a book I was intrigued from the start, I expected a more serious take of their usual subject matters, what I got was something else entirely although no less valuable.

Oh and she changes her name to Dr. Laura Elliston. I just love her spunk and snark and the way she treats everyone as equals. She does butt heads with some men in the fort but we know that's bound to happen. And one of the women, Harriet, who seems like a jerk in the beginning, turns out to be a great friend. Some issues I had though. For a professionally published book there were FAR too many typos and grammatical errors. No excuse there. Also there were a few occasions, usually around scenes between Catherine and William, that felt like sections of the book had been cut out. Like there were these jumps forward and I thought I had missed something. Overall, I don't know what you guys expected, but if you like The Graveyard Book, Tim Burton and historical fiction, I believe you will love this as much ♥ Until the next review, keep studying the scalpel and the blade and searching for adventures and friends ♥Personally I was also not impressed by the illustrations. They feel somewhat stiff at times and the portraits don't always resemble Justin and Sydnee. Additionally I really missed text explanations to go with the images included in the chapters. At times a portrait would be printed, but it wasn't clear who the portrait was of, as the text described several people. Some of the most visceral moments are concentrated in a chapter on cholera. Justin warns that “things are about to get so, so bad,” and they do. Sydnee does not flinch when describing the work of Max Joseph von Pettenkofer, a 19th century hygienist who was so (wrongly) convinced that cholera could not spread to people who practiced good hygiene that he drank diarrhea from a patient who had died of the disease. Naturally, he got cholera — but he survived and proclaimed his experiment a success. I love the relationship that slowly grows between Captain Kindle and Laura. It's so sweet and funny and I loved reading about it. But they have a lot of trials to go through. There is someone after Laura, she thinks a bounty hunter has found here when she starts getting secret envelopes with her picture and reward on it. This has her pretty freaked out, as it would anyone.
