When Vin accidentally frees Ruin when she gives up the power at the Well, Kelsier is also released. With the world now under direct threat from Ruin, a dying Preservation tasks Kelsier to find help. Following Preservation's guidance, Kelsier meets two people from different worlds, Khriss and Nazh, who point him to a covert group known as the Ire ( Eyree) as his only chance for aid. Vin’s a beautifully realized protagonist whose struggles are wonderfully written and, as always, the worldbuilding is unusual and compelling. Romantic Times As Brandon notes in his preface, this particular story has been in the works for nearly twelve years now—begun even before he was a published author. At long last, we get to go behind the scenes of some of the major events in the first trilogy. We get to find out what really happened. Legion · Skin Deep · Lies of the Beholder · The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds · Stephen Leeds: Death & Faxes This is such an incredibly clever resurrection of storytelling. The Mistborn trilogy is driven by mysterious powers; it's not until the end that we were given the full facts. Or were we? In this Sanderson reveals more of what happened beyond the mists.

Six months after the death of Paalm, Wax and Steris go to their wedding. It is interrupted by a nearby water tower falling on the church, allowing Wax to put off the marriage. He is still struggling with killing Lessie. Obviously, this is to be taken with a grain of salt - some of it is Khriss' speculation, and no historical record in a Sanderson book can be read literally. Still, the concept of Adonalsium being a living being is new, to my knowledge, and I can't help but suspect Sanderson deliberately introduced this idea. It may be a red herring, or it may be a grain of truth. This is the first novella from Cosmere I'm going to recommend that the readers MUST read. Sure, most of the novella's were fun, but Secret History fills some major gaps, and appears to be important for future entries. I fully expect another episode in the Secret History, because I Have More Questions. What did Kelsier and Spook come up with? How did they make the Bands of Mourning? What about the southern continent? These may be answered in The Lost Metal, I suppose, but there’s plenty of room for a sequel History.

Still it was so great to revisit some of my favorite characters like Vin, Elend, Spook and Sazed even if they are just mostly in the periphery. But don't let that fool you this is a brand new story not just a rehashing of the original. Arcanum Unbounded · Elantris · The Sunlit Man · Tress of the Emerald Sea · Warbreaker · White Sand · Yumi and the Nightmare Painter MISTBORN: SECRET HISTORY was incredibly mind-blowing. I can’t really say TOO much about it because it’s incredibly spoilery for those who haven’t read MISTBORN yet or even those who haven’t finished THE BANDS OF MOURNING yet. This short story takes place just after the rush of events as MISTBORN is ending and continues to span throughout the rest of the original trilogy, setting things up for the Wax & Wayne era. If you haven't read the Wax and Wayne Mistborn books yet, do so immediately. They are definitely worth the read and it's clear that Sanderson has only more great stories in this world ahead for us. Okay, so I completely and promptly started to lose my ever loving mind when I realized that this novella was going to star Kelsier in the in-between. Then, seeing his death again, and from his point of view, I was completely rebroken all over again.

The MC here is Kelsier so if you are a fan of him, you should not miss this book as it explains a lot of thing and adds character growth to already existent ones. I loved the hints of what’s to come and about the origins of the allomancy! Mythology is something I love very much and seeing this world’s mythology made me super happy. Following the reorganization of the world, Kelsier recruits Spook, who, by virtue of Sazed's new power, is now able to see him, to help him regain a Connection to the Physical Realm by playing with Hemalurgy. A good story and a good ending to the series . . . if (this) is any indication, “Wheel of Time” will have an excellent conclusion as well. Sacramento Book ReviewAlloy of Law served mostly to introduce us to the main characters (and we will go into each of them in more depth below). Wax, Wayne, and Marasi work together to take down Miles Hundredlives, a compound bloodmaker who has been kidnapping women and stealing aluminum for a shadowy organization called “The Set.” At the end of the book, the kidnapped women are still missing, Miles is executed, and Wax discovers that his uncle Edwarn, who’d been presumed dead, is actually alive and a member of the Set. We left off in The Bands of Mourning with Steris and Wax eloping. Mister Suit had been captured and possibly killed, but Lady Sequence (Telsin) had escaped, and there are rumblings of more devious plots afoot… something to do with the kandra who are working for the Set, and Trell. In Era 2, followers of Kelsier are known as “Survivorists.” Steris and Marasi are both followers of this religion. This review will contain major SPOILERS for the original Mistborn trilogy! Please do not continue on if you have not read The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages! Ettmetal, also known as harmonium, is the condensed elemental form of Harmony’s power. While difficult, it is possible to obtain atium and lerasium from ettmetal, but not through mechanical means. It reacts explosively to water.

In another sense, however, this book is about the characters struggling to decide who they are and what they want to be. It is a much more personal book than book one was, with a lot of time spent on Vin and Elend’s relationship, Sazed’s faith, and Elend’s struggles to be a king. It’s about what really happened a thousand years ago, when the Lord Ruler took the power at the Well of Ascension, and the truth behind the coming of the Deepness.Elantris is a good second book. The premise is a foil of Warbreaker’s and it is also currently a stand-alone. I think Elantris should be read toward the beginning of your Cosmere journey, since it is Brandon’s first published book and shows signs of being his earlier work — but still good! After Elantris, read the short story The Hope of Elantris and the Hugo Award-winning novella The Emperor’s Soul, set on the same planet. I finished all the released books in the Mistborn series ending with this one and I am such a large fan of it! This is a novella taking place during the events of the first trilogy but it should be read after the first trilogy as it contains major spoilers. It has minor spoilers for book 4 so it can be read after it but the important thing is finishing the main trilogy first. That was unpleasant,” Drifter said, “yet somehow still satisfying. Apparently you already being dead means I can hurt you.” In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.

However: If you have finished The Bands of Mourning, read its Postscript and the new novella, Mistborn: Secret History, you may proceed. Next, you can read Mistborn Era 2, which has three of four books published: The Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, and The Bands of Mourning. The fourth, The Lost Metal, is set to release in late 2022. Era 2 takes place 300 years after the events of Era 1 in a Wild West-slash-Steampunk setting. The magic system mixes with guns in interesting ways, and the planet of Scadrial is further explored and revealed. and one last thing: it's been confirmed that Cephandrius is not, in fact, his real name. So there goes that theory, before it even really got off the ground. Resurrecting characters is a "dangerous trope" because Brandon wants death to be a real danger for his characters. So he made sure that Kelsier's survival was hinted at and foreshadowed sufficiently.

Fantasy trilogies are so common that it’s sometimes hard to decide which ones to recommend above the others. I have no problem recommending this one. Critical Mass Brandon branched out from books to create White Sand, a trilogy of graphic novels. This series further explores a mysterious character seen in previous Cosmere books. There’s even a lot more hinted for Scadrial than we knew before. We’ve been told elsewhere (TBoM) that Spook, a.k.a. Lord Mistborn, governed for a century or so before stepping down—not dying, which is odd when you think about it. Now we have a hint at how he was so long-lived, but very little clue as to what he did after that. Is he a Worldhopper? Is he still on Scadrial? Did he finally let go and die? Saying anything more here risks revealing too much. Even knowledge of this story’s existence is, in a way, a spoiler.
