It's a flawed --and some might say unfinished — game, for sure, but I'm banking on its timeless art style hooking new players while they get to grips with the basics.

The 3DS version is certainly the way to go if you wanted a slightly less frustrating time of it (we’re looking at you, Water Temple), but frustration is part and parcel of every great Zelda game and the original gives you it by the bucketload - with the added bonus of those nostalgic pointy N64 graphics! For the average gamer, I think Link's Awakening remake makes a MUCH better intro to 2D Zelda than Link to the Past. Get even more out of Breath of the Wild by adding more sidequests, armor, and challenges for you to discover while you travel around Hyrule. If you don’t have enough system storage in the Nintendo Switch console, please use a compatible microSD card (for more information, visit our Support section). You must own The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch (European version) to access downloadable content. Zelda II is a unique entry into an early successful series that really had no expectations or restrictions holding it back, which is why it experimented with a different style of gameplay (aka the side-scroller).

In my own experience, the first Zelda game I actually played was oracle of seasons, or at least I tried, I was very young at the time and had a bad attention span. While at school, they worked as a radio show host playing video game jams during the prime studying hours of 12-2 am. Nope, despite the rumours, this is still only available on GameCube or Wii U (in its remastered HD form). If any of Nintendo's first-party mascots is as well-known as its mustachioed plumber, it's the noble sword-and-shield adventurer Link.

I started with Link's Awakening (later DX), then Link to the Past on GBA, Minish Cap, and the first 3d one was Windwaker for me, which came with OoT. Widely regarded as one of the best Zelda games of the 2D era, if not one of the best of all time, Link to the Past can be found in the Super NES library. After the tremendous success of the Breath of the Wild, it wasn't too surprising to learn that Koei Tecmo's next Dynasty Warriors-style game would serve as a prequel.

With such a wealth of Zelda action available on Switch, it feels churlish to recommend one that you can't download and play on your current console. From there on every single one and spin off and remake as it was released, on whatever platform it was released on mostly, and the Oracle games I first played on 3DS but also added complete to my collection. johnedwin I like Zelda II as well, and it was actually the first one I ever played, but I do find it very tough to recommend as the starting point for someone new to Zelda. Bound by destiny yet separated by mysterious forces, childhood friends Link and Zelda become tangled in a legendary conflict spanning the surface and sky. If you want the quintessential Zelda in it's blueprint, 2D form, I recommend starting with ALttP-- It's everything the original Zelda couldn't be and is very playable even today. While it has a lot in common with other top-down Zelda games, Link's Awakening is unique thanks a standalone story and unusual elements like Mario creature cameos. Nintendo has been more open about allowing other developers access to its franchises, but this was an unexpected twist.
