About this deal

The underlying theme of Dune is ecology and the relationship of the desert with the spice, the spice with the sandworms, and the sandworms with the desert. And in a highly advanced world with no thinking machines, Dune examines in some detail what would replace them.

While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of melange, or "the spice," a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. It could be bought at a chemist, it was the subject of CIA experiments on mind control, it was spoken about at lecterns as cures for all pyschological illnesses. It won great acclaim, as well as the Hugo and Nebula awards, establishing Frank Herbert as a master of modern science fiction. To be honest I'm not sure if publishers have classic novels reproofed for anniversary editions and reprints but I kind of feel this print of a novel is by far the worst I've ever seen on both the design and literary front. With Lord of the Rings, 1984 and Catch 22, it is, regardless of whether one normally reads science fiction, a defining novel of the 20th century. He initially sends his master at arms, Duncan Idaho, to form an alliance with the native Fremen, who, encased in still suits that recycle all their body fluids, can survive in seemingly impossible conditions. Dune seems to me unique among SF novels in the depth of characterisation and the extraordinary detail of the world it creates. Folio commissioned Hokyoung Kim for the artwork, while the late author’s wife, Wendy Benchley, provides a fascinating new introduction. In 2021, computer AI is the best player at not only chess or the even more complex Go, but is also highly adept at games such as poker which require subterfuge and counter-subterfuge.

These half-human and half-computer characters quickly became more frustrating than fascinating, though. The threat of Atomics looms between factions, held in check only by thin agreements which may be broken on a whim should the direction of the political wind change. We don’t have any plans to re-jacket the rest of the series (we publish several of the early sequels) but this could change! There he falls in with the Fremen, a tribe of desert dwellers who become the basis of the army with which he will reclaim what's rightfully his. Since 2009, the names of planets from the Dune novels have been adopted for the real-life nomenclature of plains and other features on Saturn's moon Titan.Against such a polarised backdrop of good versus evil it’s easy to imagine a formulaic story which stagnates into predictability.

I did, but to my great dissatisfaction, some of the most interesting information about it is hidden in the Appendixes and the list of “Terminology of the Imperium” included at the back of the book. This is not simply a battle between Good and Evil, Atreides and Harkonnen, the Empire and the Rebellious Fremen, it’s also a conflict between the human and the animal, fear and trust, loyalty and fanaticism, where a future of the absolute Triumph of Good is far worse than the Evil it would replace. Charmed Life arrives in an explosion of magic in this edition illustrated by Alison Bryant and introduced by Katherine Rundell. This much anticipated edition is illustrated by Sam Weber, whose work also appears in the acclaimed Folio editions of Fahrenheit 451 and Lord of the Flies . I’m going to have to start my review of Frank Herbert’s Dune with a word of warning about my specific edition, the paperback 50th anniversary edition published by Hodder under ISBN 978-0-340-96019-6.

I have read about this book being the best Sci fi book ever and with the film being released soon, I had to check it out. The first Dune Book can be read as standalone but if you really enjoyed it, Dune Messiah is definitely worth reading. From the start, I found it difficult to relate to them, because their nature is so far removed from my own. I'm not a huge sic-fi reader but I love the universe that Herbert has created with all of the imaginative species and traits. Describes a book or dust jacket that does show some signs of wear on either the binding, dust jacket or pages.

It's truly one of the greatest series I've read so far and I only hope it will continue to make me feel the way it has so far. We will process the refund due to you as soon as possible and, in any case within thirty (30) days of the day we confirm via e-mail that you are entitled to a refund for defective goods. The plot of the first third of the book is not so much foreshadowed as explained in advance in intricate detail. Melange, or 'spice', is the most valuable - and rarest - element in the universe; a drug that does everything from increasing a person's life-span to making intersteller travel possible. Any sort of link or text post is welcome as long as it is about printed / text / static SF material.
