The sloes skins will split as they thaw - this is a good sign as it means the flavour will be released throughout the fruit. Seal your sterilised container and shake I know she’ll make a success of it. Kim is passionate about everything she does. She throws herself fully into every project, every product and has established her business. Eleanor’s event starts at 6.30pm on Tuesday 14 November. Bothy Tales with John D. Burns is being held on Monday 13 November at 6:30pm. The events will include an audience Q&A and a chance to buy signed copies of books. Sloes are edible raw but you must be careful. While raw sloes are rich in antioxidants with an abundance of anti-inflammatory properties, they have a dark side. If eaten in large quantities they become toxic due to the presence of amygdalin in their stones. Once consumed the human body metabolises amygdalin into cyanide which can be lethal in large doses. So, if you do eat any raw sloes always spit out the stone.

Kim used leftover fruit juice from her homemade jam to lead the charge for the creation of Scottish flavoured spirits with the launch of her Gin Bothy Raspberry Gin.

Summary

Millar latterly ran North Street Dairy with his sister Alison Durward and wife Marlene. It had previously been run by his mum Aileen and dad Norman and they proudly kept the name of his grandfather Alan - A. McLeod - on milk bottles throughout their tenure.

We began our gin journey by accident. Rather than let fruit juice from jam-making go to waste, founder Kim began experimenting. After a trial infusion of gin with fruit (zero waste!) the Gin Bothy was born. Burns practices escapism in it’s simplest form – hill walking. Getting out on your own, armed with a map, a compass and a stout pair of boots. (And often, as required in Scotland, a small bag of coal, a large bottle of whisky, some food and a sleeping bag.) The book is filled with articles or essays and jumps around a little, but that doesn’t affect the cohesiveness. All the tales portray his sense of wonder at nature, and glee at his semi-retired state meaning he can go walking whenever he likes. Heartily jealous, John. Of course, the exact location of the sloes is one you’ll need to discover for yourself — that’s part of the fun of foraging! What is Sloe Gin? Unless you want withered stalks, leave the knife in the kitchen drawer. When you pull and twist, the stalk will separate near the roots. The plant will then grow a new stalk in its place, leading to a more bountiful harvest next season. It’s very easy to see why Burns has won so many awards and hearts with his writing. His writing is funny, saturated with his love of nature, charming, insightful, and portrays a sense of peacefulness missing from the world right now. While we hope to resume hosted tastings at The Bothy Experience in Glamis soon, our virtual tastings bring the atmosphere of our 4-star visitor attraction to you! Some virtual tastings are open to the public, but if your group has 10 or more boxes you can book a private tasting. Just give us the details of everyone taking part when booking and we'll send their Bothy At Home boxes directly to their door! Classic pairings of ginger and strawberries reinforce rhubarb's reputation as a sweet. Even roasted rhubarb is eaten alongside ice cream. Both home cooks and Michelin-starred chefs seem to agree that rhubarb's best partner is sugar — lots of it. The loch Arkaig project aims to secure the future of the Scots pine forest by helping the local community manage the forest through restoration techniques which involve the sensitive movement of non-native species encouraging natural regeneration and protection from deer browsing. Our small batch rich liqueur is bursting with natural flavour and great neat on ice, in your hip flask, as an accompaniment to dessert, or with Prosecco or Champagne. I’m giving this book two and a half out of five because the writing is well-crafted; the author is quite an eloquent wordsmith, who comes across as convivial and engaging and I tend to share his disdain for fussy bureaucracy, modern ways of thinking and new-fangled-gadgets in the hills – i.e. anything invented after about 1976! (Though personally, I could have done without the incongruous Ku Klux Klan quips.) What’s more, as a lover of bothy life and hills, the book offered a nostalgic journey to some old favourite haunts.
