Battle mats are a tool used in a variety of tabletop roleplaying games, including D&D. In Dungeons and Dragons, many players prefer to visualize combat through the use of battle mats and miniature figurines. The mats represent the terrain where combat occurs. Usually, these mats are gridded, which makes it easier to navigate D&D’s movement rules. Typically, each 1-inch square represents five feet of movement. Do You Need a Battle Map for D&D?

Gridded Battlemat with wet erase markers fun....but takes time to draw out and my skill of drawing is questionable at best.

Before attempting the stain removal method, test each procedure on an inconspicuous area of the material or surface to be cleaned. I have a friends battle mat that he has given up on so i am trying everything i can just to see if anything works. The permanent marker is dried in and set and has been for several weeks. Here is what i found: TableWar battle mats are typically made of a durable and smooth material, such as neoprene or vinyl, and feature a printed design that represents a battlefield or other gaming environment. I bought 2 small (20x30cm) frame-less whiteboards (not sure about availability where you are from, but here it's readily available in the local bookstore/ office supply store) Pretty much, could anyone help me out in choosing what to buy, with any anecdotes or pro-tips that came in experience? There are several types of battle mats for you to choose from, each with their own unique features and benefits. Some common types of battle mats include wet erase, dry erase, vinyl, and cloth. Wet erase vs. dry erase The Gale Force Nine gaming mat is ideal for tabletop RPG gamers who don’t have much space. This battle map is 72″ x 48″ at full size, but can roll up and store nicely. This is a great option for someone looking for affordability and easy storage. Factors to Consider When Choosing a Battle Mat They come in a variety of sizes and styles, including grid, hex, and plain, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. Chessex battle mats are also double-sided, so you can use both sides for different encounters or campaigns. Printed out battlemaps from photoshop and others....takes so much time cutting and taping them together. Then when the maps are so huge that you're using 10 or more sheets then the table has to be equally massive...that or moving the map around is a pain.

Chessex is a well-known brand in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, and their battle mats are highly regarded by players and Dungeon Masters alike. These mats are made of high-quality materials and are designed to withstand the rigors of regular use. Stylistically it isn’t really all that special, it’s a standard white mat, which might look a little plain for some. But most battle mats don’t really need a lot of style since they’re designed to be blank canvases for you to use. Essentially it comes down to personal preference, if your group likes some fantasy-styled elements to play around with you might want a mat that’s more interesting. Wet erase battle mats are designed to be used with water-based markers, which can be easily wiped off the mat with a damp cloth. Dry erase battle mats, on the other hand, are meant to be used with dry erase markers, which can be easily erased with a dry cloth or eraser. Wet erase battle mats are more durable and resistant to smudging, but dry erase battle mats are easier to clean and don’t require the use of water. Vinyl vs. cloth Isopropal Alchohol: Does nothing. No stain removal, but also doesn't appear to damage anything as well.

So we've settled upon using a cheap flatscreen tv that we place on the table and hook it up to a laptop running MapTool. Each map is imported into MapTool and with that free software we can do anything we need. Place tokens (digital or physical), draw digitally on the map and place the PCs miniatures. I'm sure it can do other stuff. There's way more in there than I use but it serves our purposes. On top of all that, they are compatible with dry erase markers, so you can easily draw out maps and plans on the mat during your game. Overall, Chessex battle mats are a great choice for any Dungeons and Dragons enthusiast. TableWar I found out that there's a few options regarding battle mats, and don't really know what even look in the product to decide. I'm just looking for a square one, with a decent (but not huge) size, and above all, durable. I don't really care about the maker, so it can be WotC, the guys behind Pathfinder or "RPG-Tools.com", as long as I can buy it in Spain. As you've discovered, battle mats aren't really made for extended marking. Mats are typically wiped after every session, and most gamers use only non-permanent overhead projector markers on them. Even then, some colours (like red) can leave a faint stain even when promptly wiped up at the end of the session.
