Description

Earlier in this post, we discussed the characteristics of Blanket Weed and stated that the key difference between the two main types is that one is floating and the other is submerged. This is where that information becomes of significance because at Envii we treat them slightly differently. The best way to discourage algae long term is to remedy the conditions that are helping algae to thrive.Reducing the amount of nutrients entering the pond is crucial: Organic waste and poor filtration can cause excess, unwanted nutrients to start to linger in your pond water. These nutrients are what the blanket weed feeds on and help it to multiply. Too Much Sun With large ponds and lakes, it may be best to bring in professionals – go tothe National Association of AgriculturalContractors(select ‘find a contractor and 'aquatic weed control’) or Complete Weed Control. Using ultrasound Deliveries will take place between 09:00-17:00 Monday to Friday. Delivery outside of these hours may be subject to an additional fee and local depot availability.

Particles of dirt can provoke the growth of blanket weed, so it’s a good idea to clean your filter regularly. This will help remove any debris that could be providing nutrients for the weed and ensure that your pond remains clear and healthy. 3. Get rid of excessive numbers of fish Garden ponds that sit in the sunlight are usually the perfect places for algae to thrive, which is why they’re a problem all pond-owners need to know how to deal with. What Causes Algae and Blanket Weed In A Pond? Pond Lilies are also a great idea as blanket weed thrives on sunlight. Adding pond lilies to your pond will reduce sunlight levels and absorb nutrients that otherwise the blanket weed would use to succeed. They also provide shade and shelter for your fish. Pond Blanket WeedAvoid putting soil in the pond. When adding new plants, make surethey’reinlow-nutrient, aquatic compost

To understand how best to get rid of algae, then you need to understand what causes it. Excess Nutrients As well as all of these reasons, blanket weed also just looks ugly for your pond’s overall aesthetic. How Do I Remove Blanket Weed From My Pond? Restore The Water Balance When planting pond plants, use aquatic planting soil or sieved garden topsoil from ground that hasn’t been manured or top dressed. By growing more plants there will be fewer available nutrients to the algae

We would advise ensuring your pond has enough plants within it, as these will use up the excess nutrients that can lead to blanket weed building up in your garden pond. It is essential to have the right balance of plants in your pond, aiming to mix up oxygenators, marginal and deep water plants. The use of phosphate removers/absorbers provides an alternative method of removing these excess nutrients in ponds where plants are not an option. Blanket Weed Pond Treatment Plants are an excellent way to balance your pond. They can thrive on high levels of nutrients and can be a key indicator as to whether your pond is healthy or not. This is a question that pond owners will probably be asking forever and unfortunately the news isn't good, because when you have clear and healthy water, the chances are high that you'll get blanket weed. This is after all a natural, native, filamentous algae, the spores of which can be brought to your pond by insects or birds or even bythe wind. Don’t fight it - accept it butwe can tell you how to manage it so well that you wouldn’t even know it was there. It is quite easy for a pond to meet the ideal conditions required for the growth of Blanket Week, hence why it is often a recurring problem. The combination of sunlight, warmer water (usually in spring and summer) and nutrients all contribute to the production of Blanket Weed in a pond. It’s important to understand that this combination is what forms the ‘hyper nutrition’ that allows Blanket Weed to thrive and that the contributing factors to the hyper nutrition are many and varied. If you’ve used a treatment to remove blanket weed from your pond, then you must create the right balance in your pond after this. If you fail to do this, you can guarantee the problem will reoccur.

Various other products are available – some appear to be effective only in settling suspended debris, others may give short-term control of free-floating algae. Some claim to control the most troublesome types, such as filamentous algae or blanket weeds, but as there are many different forms of these, you might have to try several products to find one that works in your pond.Treatment needs to be repeated at intervals. As mentioned before, both types of Blanket Weed come from the same source, that source is algae. Therefore both types are caused by the same thing, despite their slight difference in characteristics. So the question now is, what actually does cause Blanket Weed? In ponds where plants are not an option, use phosphate removers to artificially reduce the excess nutrients to cut off the blanket weeds food source. Rotting plants and fallen leaves can also provide nutrients for blanket weed in your pond. Make sure to remove any such debris from the water as soon as you spot it, as this will help prevent the weed from taking hold. 6. Ensure that fertiliser and debris do not wash off the ground during the rains If all else fails, you can use a phosphate remover to reduce the levels of phosphates in your pond. This will help prevent blanketweed from taking hold by reducing its access to nutrients. PreventingRegularly maintain pond filters to remove uneaten fish food, fish waste and other debris, contributing to excess nutrient levels. One of the best ways to prevent blanket weed from taking hold in your pond’s water is to make sure you have a good pump and filter system in place. The pump should be powerful enough to keep the water moving around the pond, and the filter should be able to remove organic matter such as dead leaves, algae, and dirt. 2. You should clean the filter regularly Skimmers are a great way to remove debris from the surface of your pond, which can provide nutrients for the blanket weed to feed off. Installing one will help make sure that your water stays clean and clear. 10. Get aquatic plants

To treat submerged Blanket Weed, we suggest you use Algae Klear Xtra, which is a liquid treatment that will be more effective at travelling down to where the submerged Blanket Weed has anchored itself to, also killing it and cutting off it off from its environment which then allows you to again, safely remove it from the pond. Remove any rotten vegetation, including dead leaves. Although these seem like small issues, they can unbalance the water levels again, boosting the nutrient levels. Like all plants, algae require oxygen when not photosynthesising. Algae will consume a large amount of the pond’s oxygen levels that your fish and pond plants need to survive. Creating more competition for oxygen, the algae will create an unhealthy environment within your pond. Hinders Sunlight

dense growths of hair-like green strands that float under or on the surface or cling to plants at the side of the pond – these are known as blanket weed or silkweed Pallet delivery is to the kerbside (at least 2 people will be needed to off-load depending on item size.) Nutrients from manures and fertilisers can be washed in to a pond by heavy rain. Ideally design and build a pond to avoid this, and do not apply these close to the pond Tap water is rich in minerals, so avoid using this to fill or top up a pond where possible and use collected rainwater instead Handle/pole extendable from 4 to 6ft (122 – 183cm) and with the attached brush head, gives a total reach of 7.5ft (231cm)
