McCambridge had to sue Warner Brothers for credit as the voice of the demon. William Friedkin, on the Diane Riehm Show (NPR, 29 April 2012) said that originally she didn't want a credit, saying that she wanted the audience to believe the voice was Regan's. However, after it was released she changed her mind, and was given the credit. In The Beginning and Dominion, the victims possessed by Pazuzu are played by Izabella Scorupco and Billy Crawford respectively, and the voices of Pazuzu are Rupert Degas in the former film and Mary Beth Hurt in the latter. Based on the archaeological record, depictions of Pazuzu seemingly sprung up, fully realized, out of nowhere. Pazuzu’s appearance did not change over time; it was as if the world simply came to an understanding about who he was and what he looked like. Once we learn the truth about Pazuzu’s purpose, Jony’s theory has legs. Was it in fact Pazuzu who forced the demons from young Regan’s body, and not the failed exorcisms by the two priests?

Some scholars believe that Egyptian demon Bes is a counterpart of Pazuzu. [3] [23] Notably both are known to be protector demons [24] in the home. [24] They have iconographic links: both having lion parts, [25] wings, a distinctly long phallus, and similar facial features. [26] And there are noted similarities between the positioning of the two on protective amulets as well. [26] Another close connection is their association with the protection of pregnant women and mothers. [26] [27] Pazuzu was married to Lamashtu. Stories about Lamashtu suggest she was response for illness and causing death to new born babies, and children. Lamashtu is often depicted as a mythological hybrid, with a hairy body, a lioness’ head with donkey’s teeth and ears, long fingers and fingernails, and the feet of a bird with sharp talons. She is often shown standing or kneeling on a donkey, nursing a pig and a dog, and holding snakes. “She thus bears some functions and resemblance to the Mesopotamian demon Lilith.” While there are those who think that the legends might be paranormal or supernatural in nature, some members of Hodgson’s expedition knew that these were aliens. It’s why they’ve been planning on digging deeper to find their lair. One journal even cites how alien technology can help the human race.As Christianity swept across the world, the devout no longer had a need for protective demons, and Christians naturally wanted belief in the old ways to disappear in favor of their new monotheistic religion. Demons of the old faith were relegated to Hell — after all, anything from the underworld had no place in the holy world of Heaven. A statue of Pazuzu appears in the Once Upon a Time episode "There's No Place Like Home", as one of the unpredictable artifacts in Rumplestilskin's vault. There is also a notable connection to the earlier Babylonian personifications of The Four Winds. [12] These beings, as depicted on several Cylinder seals, have wings, and each represents a different direction of wind; South, East, West, and North. [12] It is of note that Franz Wiggermann calls attention to the crooked positioning of the masculine West Wind [12] in seals, as similar to posture in Pazuzu's iconography. [12] More connections appear in later seals, as this same bent-over figure takes on talons and a scorpion's tail. [12] The main difference in their depictions is the head, thus Wiggerman concludes that it is Pazuzu's body and not his head that denotes him as a wind demon. [12] Another scholar, Scott Noegel, asserts that Pazuzu's possession of four wings links to the term kippatu, meaning "circle, loop, circumference, and totality" [20] suggesting his control over all cardinal directions of wind inherited from his predecessors. [20] Lamastu [ edit ] William Peter Blatty's creations of Pazuzu and The Exorcist were based on a heavily reported series of 1949 events in St. Louis, Missouri concerning the possession of a 14-year-old known as "Robbie Mannheim" (or sometimes "Roland Doe"). Blatty, who was a student at Georgetown University, read about the story in Washington, D.C. newspapers and created The Exorcist twenty years later. The Exorcist is widely regarded as one of the most influential horror movies of all time. Even now, half a century after its release, it continues to terrify audiences, in large part due to its horrifying practical effects and iconic antagonist: Pazuzu. Pazuzu is known to us today largely due to The Exorcist, but the widespread prevalence of his iconography throughout the ancient world shows that even in his time, he was a well known and fairly popular demon. Pazuzu is also the only prominent Mesopotamian demon or deity to make its way into Hollywood films — and there may be several reasons for this.It is revealed later on in the game that the Sumerians molded his appearance off a race of extraterrestrial creatures that take the form of giant humanoid bats. A balanced phase, in the Old Babylonian Period, when cylinder seal designs often mix images (gods, symbols, and other motifs) of good and bad associations with respect to mankind. Documents and objects that give protection from Lamashtu’s evil doings were widespread in the 1st millennium in Mesopotamia, a period in which this type of belief seems to have flourished.
