Description

Daisy was imitated by other manufacturers, using similar head moulds to make clone fashion dolls. These dolls may be unmarked, or be marked simply "Hong Kong". It was her clothes that were to set her apart at the time and her clothes that are making her sought-after today. Mary Quant Daisy Doll Clothes Every year a new fashion booklet was issued, showing any new Daisy dolls, and all her latest fashions for that year. Each booklet had a theme; the first, in 1973, being called My Fashion Diary, telling all about Daisy's year and the various outfits she wears each month for various occasions. The 1974 booklet is called My Round the World Holiday, in which Daisy travels the world, showing off more wonderful outfits designed by Mary Quant. Later issues included: My Exciting Life as a Reporter (1975); I'm Having Fun as a Travel Courier (1976); All about my Gift shop (1976); and My Glamorous Life as a Ballerina (1977). Quant’s name is now synonymous with the miniskirt, but she was responsible for developing much more. Along with her innovative use of modern materials like PVC, vibrant makeup, bold graphic designs, she created dynamic designs and role models for children through her dolls and children’s wear ranges.

Over the years, Daisy went through a few different looks herself, following in the footsteps of image chameleons like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton. There were three kinds of Daisy Doll made: Dizzy Daisy, the basic doll without bendable legs or twisting waist; the stiff bodied dolls that do have bendable legs and twisting waist, and theDashing Daisy’s with bendable waist and curved hands to enable her to hold things. In 1976 Flair Toys issued a special doll using the Daisy sculpt, boasting striking green eyes and short, straight hair. She was called Havoc - Super Agent, and had her own wardrobe for missions, a secret agent motorbike and weapons. Ellie 'It's such a cute doll, it was a little bit smaller than i expected but other than that my daughter loves it'

Marketed as ‘Mary Quant makes Daisy the best dressed doll in the world’, the 9 inch tall doll used Mary Quant’s signature daisy logo. Daisy was manufactured in Hong Kong by Model Toys Ltd for Flair Toys Ltd. There are three different versions of the doll: Dizzy Daisy, who has a stiff body and unbendable legs, and is jointed just at hips and shoulders, a later version with bendable legs, and an active version called Dashing Daisy. The doll’s hair color was in many shades of blonde as well as brunette and red. Each fashion book took the reader on a journey in Daisy's busy life. Children could emulate her activities with their own Daisy doll and outfits. Imagine the possibilities with Barbie! There’s a wide range of Barbie dolls, playsets and fashions to explore, from the beautiful Barbie Dreamhouse to the latest Fashionistas.

Jonsey 'Great little doll set for a toddler and with accessories too. Ideal gift given to any little girl'Mat 'Brilliant toy we've started potty training our little girl and this toy has really helped encourage her.' Aleena 'My almost 2 year old absolutely loved this, although the potty was a lot smaller then it looks in the picture, otherwise great for the price it is.' Daisy also had her own bike with a saddle bag, and a "Daisy mobile", rather like the "Mystery Machine" in Scooby-Doo. Later on she had a scooter which ran on battery power. The exhibition begins in post-war London with the opening of Quant’s experimental shop Bazaar, on Chelsea’s King’s Road in 1955. It shows how her designs, often based on schoolgirl pinafores or masculine tailoring, brought an entertaining slant to fashion, soon noticed by fashion editors and newspaper journalists in the media of the day. Mary Quant runs from 6 April 2019 to 16 February 2020 at the V&A Museum. To coordinate with the opening of this event Katy Canales, curator at the V&A Museum of Childhood, shares her research into Quant fashion dolls.
