But despite the newer Mju II leading on almost all accounts, the difference in overall shooting experience isn’t as clear. I’ve really enjoyed how the older camera rendered my scenes, and I haven’t noticed the need for a faster lens or a higher top shutter speed in practice. Flash modes: Auto, red-eye reduction, suppressed, forced/fill-in, night scene (slow synch up to 4 seconds). The other flash modes are Auto Flash, Red Eye Reduction, Night Scene, and Night Scene with Red Eye Reduction. There’s a bit of a difference in the build of the mju I and mju II. The mju I is a bit bigger with a more symmetrical shape than the mju II and because of this, it’s a little bit more bulky.

The flash starts charging when the cover is opened rather than when the shutter button is partially depressed. Making the camera much more "ready" for the shot, compared to most digital point-and-shoots. Most of the other models’ lenses are a lot slower, especially the zoom versions. (A “slower” lens means a higher minimum f-stop). Size / Dimensions Most models are made entirely of plastic and controlled by electronics, which unfortunately means that once they break, it’s unlikely that they can be fixed.

So how does it compare? Well, the viewfinder is quite small, and it doesn’t provide full coverage. I don’t really find this a problem. I frame with the viewfinder, if I get more than I counted on I can crop if I want. I often crop to straighten or correct perspective a bit anyway, so a bit of extra frame is fine in my books… Just be conscious of the fact that one of the compromises the Olympus mju-ii has is a VF that’s a bit like looking through a keyhole. (It should be pointed out though, it’s no smaller than the Yashica T5’s vf which is a much bigger camera.) There is also zero info in the viewfinder other than the green focus confirmation light and an orange light to tell you the flash will be used. The green light flashes if focus can’t be found … and that, bar some parallax lines is it! Similar to the Olympus MJU II this can also have an issue where the lens sort of pops in and out and clearly isn’t working properly. Again this is probably an electrical fault that needs sorting by sending it off to a proper repair shop. Flash not working Another important note on the durability of these cameras is that they are considered “all weather” or “splash proof”. The Mju II is weather sealed so that even if you end up getting it a bit wet, the moisture won’t make its way inside of the camera.

Mju II’s shutter system also comes with two fantastic options for self-portraits : a 12-second delay self-timer and a wireless remote trigger. A tripod hole completes the selfie rig. Camera sounds and known issues. The Olympus mju-ii does attempt to redeem itself with regards to flash. It’s fill flash is very good, it has red eye reduction, slow sync (“night scene”) and even red eye and slow sync combined. And of course flash off. Ed Note: Neither the original Mju I or Mju II feature Zoom lenses, though many models later released by Olympus under the "Stylus" naming convention do. While these Zoom lens iterations are often more affordable and readily available, keep in mind that with zoom capabilities comes more moving parts that can and will eventually fail—bear in mind, these are 20-30 year old cameras we're talking about after all.) The problem, really, is that it’s 2018. There’s no longer any reason to compare the Olympus Mju II to its contemporaries or cameras in its class. Its time has come and gone. Today, it’s much more useful to compare any given film camera we want to any other film camera, because they’re all essentially doing the same thing. There’s a ton of choice out there. Mju II is a versatile camera that can shoot anything with a DX code. Credits: dannyedwards, area51delcorazon, yokekei, ethermoon, fayeusokoi& tagliatele_la_testa Technical Specifications

There are certainly other issues that can arise with the MJU II but these are the most common that I’ve found, often most of the issues will be in a forum on google or in a youtube video but sometimes there’s very little you can do, the Olympus MJU II doesn’t want to be opened up and the flash can hold a lot of voltage even when it’s not been used for a long time, so be very careful. But, wait. Before you Mju fans grab your pitchforks I’ll admit it – the Olympus Mju II does a lot of things really well. And a lot of the things it does well are admittedly much more important than those things that I just whined about, the user experience of a film camera in 2018. The Olympus MJU I is best for travel photography, day-to-day life, nightlife and maybe even street photography. Its small, compact size and ease of use just makes it the ideal day-to-day companion.
