His artist sister, Carol (Mary Germaine) tries to get him out of it by agreeing to meet Markham in his old country house. BBFC: Release Date: 05/10/2015 Run Time: 193 minutes Languages: English LPCM Mono Subtitles: None DVD Regions: Region 0 (All) Formats: Pal Aspect Ratio: Full Screen 1. An Army officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) must solve the murder of a blackmailer or be charged themselves in this British crime drama directed by Maurice Elvey. The plotline's not bad; a mild mannered embezzler becomes implicated in his girlfriend's murder and takes refuge in a boarding house, where he is pursued by gangsters, including John LeMesurier, who is wasted in this movie, although overall the cast are good. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Of the cast, only Ingeborg Wells and Denis Shaw show any spirit, and direction is not particularly in evidence. The other film is really a rough print with opening casts incomplete but I suspect adding it as a bonus was the only way it would get a DVD release. The plot grows increasingly strained as it strives to keep us guessing just who amongst a number of shady characters has knocked off the blackmailer, and eventually falls across the line. From the theme music I was expecting a comedy but it turned into an above average thriller I thought the 2 leads bounced off each other well and mary germaine held her own as genuine costar but the other men in the house were poorly written.

In a remote mansion Army Officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) only escape the charge of murder by finding the real killer. Mary Germaine is great though, and there are some attempts at lightness of touch which raises this above the average B potboiler of the time. Filmed at Nettlefold Studios this neat little crime drama tells the story of An innocent hitch-hiker who takes a ride into danger when he accepts a lift from a woman who is being blackmailed. The investigation reveals numerous possible suspects leading the couple to try and find the real killer themselves. William Sylvester plays the hitcher-cum-sleuth well and Denis Shaw is good as they nosey butler in this short-but-sweet double-crossing pot-boiler that do.Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows. Mary Germaine hires William Sylvester to accompany her to a rendezvous at a blackmailer's country house even though she suspects he may be a convict on the run in this low-budget B-movie that punches above its weight in the early stages before collapsing under the weight of expectation. The story concerns a traveller who finds himself accused of murder after he receives a ride from a person who kills an extortionist. The second film the editing is not so good, blacks out and then starts on a new bit of film but otherwise good. This is quite an entertaining little film, falling squarely into the Mystery/whodunit genre and not really veering anywhere towards noir or even thriller. The script is clever and witty, and we loved most of the movie, although the suspense lagged a bit towards the end. The Swedish Film Institute has a duty to support production, distribution and screening of valuable film, to preserve and make accessible the Swedish film heritage and to represent Swedish film abroad. There is also some decent characterisation – for example, with Bassett the butler and his listening at keyholes and room of pin-ups – and much creepy sneaking about, which I always love. The print is reasonable, despite some scratching and the occasional bleaching that seems to be a feature of Renown releases. A hitchhiker becomes a murder suspect after he accepts a ride from a person who kills a blackmailer. It’s about the characters’ interaction – not wanting to be alone or with any of the others either – and also keeps us guessing as to whether Jimmy is the escaped prisoner or not. Genre Drama | Crime Synopsis A blackmailer is murdered, and the police find that there is a long list of suspects who wanted to see him dead.
