Description

Unusually for an Islay single malt, Stiùireadair is unpeated, allowing the sweet coastal character of our island to shine through. We deliver to a number of international destinations including the USA. Bunnahabhain whisky was founded in 1881 and today is the only distillery on the island of Islay to use pure spring water in its production process. The water is drawn from the Margadale River and avoids being changed by the plentiful peat that is in the area. While not all Bunnahabhain whiskies are unpeated, their signature blend is an unpeated whisky with much lighter tones. For those looking for a smokier formula, try the Bunnahabhain Moine whisky, which contains Islay peat. For such a small area, Islay is full of world renowned whisky distilleries including the likes of Ardbeg, Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Laphroaig, and Lagavulin to name a few. We’re dedicated to providing you with the largest selection of Islay malts, and we work closely with some of the top Islay whisky distilleries to bring you only the finest sip. From the rich and intense flavours of Smokehead to the smooth and mellow character of Bunnahabhain whiskies there’s something for everyone.

Building a Victorian-age distillery in such a remote area was no mean feat and took almost two years to complete. As well as the distillery itself, a road and pier had to be constructed, along with cottages for the workers and a small schoolhouse where their children could be educated. Spirit ran for the first time in 1883 and the distillery was soon producing a much in-demand whisky which was sent in great quantity to the giant blending houses of Glasgow and beyond. If you like these whiskies, then you’ll love our Campbeltown and island whiskies, which share the same maritime characteristics as most Islay single malts, but with their own distinct flavours. Award winning Scotch: International Spirits Challenge 2020 - Gold. International Wines & Spirits Competition 2020 - Silver. Scotch Whisky Masters 2021 - Gold. The Bunnahabhain distillery is known for its connection to the sea, as the distillery is situated in a remote area on the Islay coast. The whisky contains the aroma and flavour of the salty sea air from where it is aged, and there is also a recognisable tone from the sherry cask.Bunnahabhain has a reputation as the mildest and most mellow of Islay malts. This has always seemed a little misleading to me however, for even though the spirit is largely unpeated, it remains a malt of great character and robust flavour, forged through a unique marriage of sherry and salty sea air. Smell:A youthfulness about the nose. Feisty even. There’s a ton of Brine, wafts of Bonfire Smoke and Smoked Kippers with Lemon and Sea Salt, interwoven with some classic Sherry notes – Raisins, Prunes and dark Caramel. A creamy mouth feel with a dried fruit influence and notes of sea salt, creamy caramel and hints of nuts and gentle spice

When tasted, these scents combine with a toffee flavour, along with caramel, orange, cinnamon, and pepper, making this a really enjoyable and mellow tasting experience. In fact, Bunnahabhain is known for producing some of the most mellow whisky in the island of Islay — other than their peaty offering, Moine. Thoughts: No doubt this is a very affordable Bunnahabhain, but then so is the 12 year old – and it’s magnificent. Stiureadair is some way off that level but if you find the prospect of a younger Bunnahabhain that turns the coastal vibes up to 11 enticing, this is the dram for you.Taste: Toffee, Creamy Sherry, Caramel and Orange with Cinnamon and Pepper. Sea Salt & Brine and Peppery Smoke on the finish.
