The active player can make any combinations they’d like to form 2 sets of dice, while the other players may only use the white dice unless they’d like to use 1 of their 3 starting black die uses, indicated on the right side under the treasures. Damage points are subtracted from player scores, producing a winner with a score that usually ranged in the 60-80-point range during my four tries at the game.

On many other turns (this was particularly true with three players), you will mark spaces as visited on your sheet, then watch others go through the process of finding the “best” spaces to mark off, and no one can do anything until everyone is ready. This list has wallet-sized and wallet-friendly games; games for the first timer and for friends who have been playing for years. If the numbers are not filled in, players will have to visit spaces surrounding the monsters to activate those numbers for monsters. The first player to defeat a monster gets a higher gem reward, but the other players may deal 1 damage to the monster, even if they haven’t accessed that room yet. There are also 2 more enemies in the Expert dungeon, which doesn’t sound like much but when they’re armored can prove quite the challenge. Players normally make dice pairs with only the white dice each turn, but if you’re the Active Player you can also use the black die to make pairs and sums (so from a pool of five dice total). It adds some decision making into your pairing and there is a nice race element to defeating the monsters. There are also two shared goals unique to each dungeon that award gems based on specific set collections, with a bonus for being “firsties. One gives you a gem and some extra Life Points, another lets you cross off any two spaces of your choice, and the third lets you use the Black Die another three times.

The passive player can use the black die if they cross off one of the three black dice in the green start area on the right of their sheet. The passive players are limited to just the 4 white dice while the active player is allowed to include the black die in one of his pairs. When a player marks off any space next to a monster, future pairs can be applied towards damaging a monster, assuming that monster has a number that aligns with your die rolls.

If they have a torch, players can also cross off an extra space adjacent to somewhere they’ve already crossed off for each use of the torch they have left. With four different boards to play, there is plenty of variety in the box, and they do give you a lot of sheets to play on, so it will be a long while before you run out. My biggest problem with it is that once someone gets a few rolls their way, it’s hard for anyone to catch up to them.
