I completely adored this highly entertaining and comic look at the Irish cultural phenomena that is being an Aisling.

Dass Aisling schon seit Jahren mit John zusammen ist und eigentlich glücklich, blitzt hin und wieder durch, wird aber von dem großen Wunsch der baldigen Hochzeit komplett überschattet.So wie ich das aufgefasst habe, liebt sie John aber hält es einfach nicht mehr aus, dass alles in der Schwebe steht. Aisling, of the title, is a 28 year old Irish woman with a long-term boyfriend (seven years) who seems to have no intention of proposing anytime soon, despite the fact that his team mates are inviting them to engagement parties and weddings at increasingly regular intervals. Denn wie oft habe ich über sie den Kopf geschüttelt, mir an den Kopf gefasst und gegen die Stirn geschlagen? So maybe a few things were slightly over the top, some a tad stereotypical and some a bit predictable, but it really didn’t matter. I love the way Aisling has her horizons broadened and her thinking pushed into different directions when her personal relationship falls apart.

Bridget Jones habe ich zwar nicht gelesen aber in Grundzügen hat mich dieses Buch dann doch an den Film erinnert. Sie ist eine anstrengende Person, die viele Pläne schmiedet und Wünsche hegt, ohne zu wissen, ob es wirklich ihre eigenen sind. They love hoofing into the Coors Light if they’re ‘Out’, or the vodka and Diet Cokes if they’re ‘Out Out’. She is bought to life here by the authors, a novel that has its origins in a Facebook page that documented and captured the varied traits attributed to an Aisling. The characters are appealing and so entertaining, but the star of the show is, without a doubt, Aisling.Auch die Enthüllung um eines ihrer Familienmitglieder war irgendwie fehl am Platz und ja, das Thema sollte wirklich häufiger in Büchern auftreten und längst nicht mehr Tabu sein, aber auf diese Art und Weise fand ich es unangebracht und nicht nötig. Aisling is the friend we all wish we had; she's the sensible one when we go out and always makes sure that we get back home safely and she's the one to go to for money saving tips and best deals.

I'm not Irish, never even been to Ireland so my entire experience of Irish families is based on reading Marian Keyes. Sie wollte einfach nur nicht die Letzte sein, die heiratet und all ihren Freundinnen nacheifern, ganz so, als wäre eine Hochzeit ein Wettkampf, den es zu gewinnen gilt. You find yourself laughing at and with Aisling, cringing with her, crying with her – and all the time wanting the best for her. We were very excited to get a Chinese takeaway in 2001 but were upstaged just a short while later when a gang of Brazilians moved to Knocknamanagh. If you use it in any marketing material, online or anywhere on a published book without asking permission from me first, I will ask you to remove that use immediately.As her new life comes crashing down, Aisling is forced to move back home to Ballygobbard and her mam.

Yes it’s funny, yes it’s generally quite light hearted and easy to read and yeah I enjoyed most of it.

Despite all those blurbs on the back of books by Irish female novelists saying "hilarious and heartwarming" or "you'll laugh and you'll cry". Ich musste durchaus schmunzeln, aber einige der Witze waren für mich zu vorhersehbar, zu sehr Klischee. Ihr Verhalten ist so abstrus, dass ich schon nicht mehr lachen konnte (ich denke Aisling sollte vor allem lustig rüber kommen), sondern lieber weinend mit dem Kopf schütteln wollte.
