Ignoring the adult view, through a critical eye, of the underhanded deception and looking at it as a story of just pure children’s fiction without a moral message, it is classic Dahl. It is a well-written and enjoyable, fun read that children will be able to read easily at a fast pace as it is a short book and one that they will enjoy the humour of. Mrs Silver has a small pet tortoise, Alfie, who is the center of her world. One morning, Mrs Silver mentions to Mr Hoppy that even though she has owned Alfie for many years, he has only grown a tiny bit and has gained only 13 ounces (370g) in weight. She confesses that she wishes she knew of some way to make her little Alfie grow into a larger, more dignified tortoise. Mr Hoppy suddenly thinks of a way to give Mrs Silver her wish and win her heart. Here's what happens: Mr. Hoppy spends the next two months slowly replacing Mrs. Silver's pet with progressively larger tortoises. Dustin Hoffman plays the silver haired shy American ex-pat Mr Hoppy who lives in an apartment building tending to his garden on his balcony.

I have loved most everything you have penned, which seems to be biographical in some way. His first children's book was The Gremlins, about mischievous little creatures that were part of RAF folklore. The book was commissioned by Walt Disney for a film that was never made, and published in 1943.
