Internal filters are readily available and have to cope with a huge range of situations. What I want from any internal is versatility and reliability, as they are often the only form of filtration used in the aquarium.

It can be used as a lone filter or with other filters for extra filtration and water movement like I use it. Mine has been running for about 7 months now and it is still as strong as ever and continues to be completely silent. For example, if the tank is located in such a way that there are no available spaces behind, nor at the bottom, then your only choice might be to use an internal filter. If you can use an external filter, that should be your first choice. They provide advantages at all three types of filtration (mechanical, biological, and chemical) over even the best internal filter out there. However, if you must have an internal filter, then this is the one that I would recommend. Any of the Fluval U-series, starting with the U2, all the way to the U4 will provide complete filtration. They have expanded their range over time but the quality has stayed the same. This could be the best internal filter system available in the hobby, in the humble opinion of this reviewer. Please know that I do not own every model of internal filters out there. I am basing this on the ones that I have owned over the years, but there are a few models that I have not tried. Carbon inserts have visible benefits as they remove dyes from water, odours and traces of medications. They remove chlorine too. But, for me, the best media option of all is extra biological media. As with the double sponge scenario, one doing the mechanical filtering and leaving the other to do the biological filtering, is better than one media that is tasked to do two jobs. In my book, extra biological means a better filter. Not much really, other than the flip-top was a bit stiff on our new model and impeller access isn’t as accessible as it was on the previous Fluval plus model.
