We all have our preferences so if you haven't read it yet I suggest giving it a try if you're into angst, sci-fi, and apocalypse stuff+slow romance.

This book had been recommended to me many times but I kept putting it off because I was expecting some paper thin sci-fi plot with the main story following some sugar sweet romance. His dynamic with Lu Feng was super sweet, I love when a character has to fight against his beliefs for love so it hit all the right buttons. She is a fallen queen of modeling industry, who willingly sacrificed everything for the person whom she loved. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Little Mushroom is a sorrowful but sweet story about what makes us human.I haven't read the extras as it shows they're still ongoing but they better make it up to us for all the suffering. These spores landed, began to split in the moist deciduous soil, and grew into spherical bulbs like their mothers. This is about the brutal truth of survival, but rather than focusing on the ugliness of human nature in the face of an apocalypse, it focuses on the stark beauty.

It also raises some very interesting questions along the way about how far one would be willing to go to preserve humanity, and what even is their definition of humanity. I would've love to see how their lives come to be in that new era of (relative) peace, which could've also give the readers break from the gloomy atmosphere. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless―as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot. Many science fiction books actually do the opposite, where the MC is a human trying to adapt to the supernatural changes of the world, and this book's perspective on it feels like a breath of fresh air.

I also liked how there was some sort of logical explanation to the apocalypse and an explanation of why things turn out the way they are even if I'm not sure if it's true or not (the logic). The slightly loose clothes rubbed against his skin and small electric currents were transmitted from his fine nerve endings in the skin of the centre. There are really melancholy undertones to the book, and at time it can can get super heart-wrecking, especially with people dying left and right. more>> Even he is falling into deep dark loneliness, striking by ridiculous fate, his belief is still there and not shaken at all. It has a lot of dark and depressing undertones, especially in regards with death and human survival among many others. However, you might want to be cautious about the mentions of violence; its not heavy gore, but there were parts which were a bit uncomfortable to read.
