About this deal

If you want a better display, look to Realme and Xiaomi phones. The Xiaomi Redmi 10 delivers superior colors, a higher resolution and better maximum brightness. However, you may need to spend slightly more to get the 600-plus nits of brightness that we think is the minimum for a truly versatile phone display. Software and performance

However, it’s brightness that’s the Nokia G21’s major issue. On taking the phone outdoors to take some photos, we could barely see what was in the preview window. The phone just doesn’t offer the peak brightness required to deliver respectable clarity in high levels of ambient light. Why might the Nokia G21 benefit, in particular? It runs an unusually clean version of the software. No superfluous apps, and no contentious additional interface elements. Images aren’t mind-blowing, but for the price, you’re getting pictures that have a good amount of detail, well-judged auto exposure and accurate colour representation. Some of the low-light shots are a bit on the grainy side, but there’s still a lot to like here. The G21 offers mono sound, only emanating from the bottom of the phone when in landscape mode. Again, this is no different to the rest of this end of the market. The sound quality is fine, if a bit bass-light, and loses a little body compared to slightly higher-end phones. Overall, the G21’s display and sound do a job, but it’s nothing to especially write home about. PerformanceThe 90Hz maximum refresh rate is something rarely seen at this price point, but is let down by the 720p resolution on offer. It’s certainly not the worst screen we’ve seen on the market, but if you’re looking for a super-crisp experience, we suggest bumping up your budget a little. The Nokia G21 is a decent phone. It looks good, feels nice in the hand and does the basics well enough to warrant consideration. The biggest advantage the G21 holds, of course, is the massive battery underneath the textured hood – with sensible use, it lasts much longer than the average handset, to the extent that you almost forget you haven’t charged it in a couple of days. To be fair to Nokia, it told us as much. The screen is rated for 400-nits of brightness, not the 600-plus seen in budget phones with high brightness modes that engage when there’s plenty of light. The 400-nits here is more what you’d expect from a decent laptop screen; it doesn’t cut it in a phone.

That being said, I don’t think the Nokia G21’s cameras can do enough to outweigh the phone’s long list of negatives. Yes, the design is rather nice and the clean Android installation is always a positive, but the phone’s so-so performance and weak battery life don’t help the Nokia G21 pull away from the competition.

The battery does what it says on the box, lasting for a couple of days of normal use. Battery life obviously depends on how often you’re absentmindedly scrolling through social media, but the G21 offers a perfectly reliable companion for active weekends away from the sofa. The G21 also offers adaptive battery, flagging when a certain app is draining energy and reacting accordingly. Top marks for a budget phone. Camera Most people are unlikely to see that kind of longevity, but real-world stamina remains excellent. Charging every other day is a realistic proposition with a Nokia G21, even if you use it for frequent messaging and photo-taking. However, in 2022 even fairly cheap display panels can be remarkably good. Sadly, this isn’t the case here. The Nokia G21’s panel is below average, despite having a 90Hz refresh rate that makes menus appear to scroll more smoothly – when they’re not afflicted by mild UI judder, which happens fairly regularly. When it comes to processing speeds, what you’re getting here is a low-cost phone that can just about keep up with Android 11’s various actions and applications, but don’t expect day-to-day performance to be stress-free. The clean Android 11 OS is a boost, providing an attractive blank canvas for your needs. It also means you won’t have to spend the first moments of your new phone’s life looking for and deleting sneaky pre-installed apps.

The Nokia G21’s performance is uninspiring stuff, but nothing out of line with our expectations of a handset at this end of the market. This doesn’t ruin the overall experience of using a Nokia G21, but phones costing not much more have managed to make the real-world performance differences between cheap Android devices and more expensive models start to disappear. However, what you shouldn’t expect is what the high-res sensor appears to promise: detail. The Nokia G21’s images don’t hold up as expected when zoomed-in. They’re a tad soft down at pixel level, and dense textures such as the leaves of distant trees just don’t look all that realistic up-close. You should consider its real-world impact on gaming, though. Fortnite wouldn’t install at all, listing the phone as unsupported, even though the 4GB of RAM should have meant the Nokia G21 met the minimum requirements. Next up is the FTRONGRT Leather case for Nokia G21. This wallet case cover is made of waterproof soft and durable PU leather and soft TPU inner shell, excellent in scratch resistance, ventilation, soft and comfortable gripping feeling. The inner case is flexible for easily putting your Nokia G21 in the case without worrying about scratching your devices. The flip case with a stand function brings you more convenience to watch videos or play games anywhere, anytime.

With just a few positives and more than a few negatives, the Nokia G21 is a bit of a disappointment

Third on the list is the BoerHang Armor Case for Nokia G21. The inner surface of this case adopts a soft TPU design, thin and durable. The outer surface of the protective shell adopts a textured design and a non-slip and scratch-resistant material design which does not fade. The four corners strengthen the protection design. The protective shell is higher than the screen and camera, which can protect the phone more effectively.
