United Biscuits integrated Callard & Bowser with their own Terry’s confectionery subsidiary, best known for the Chocolate Orange, to form the Terry’s Group. The merged business held three percent of the British sugar confectionery market. Callard & Bowser became loss-making, and the Nuttall factory in Doncaster was closed down with the loss of 125 jobs in 1981. Production was transferred to Halifax. Altoids had enjoyed considerable success in the United States from the late 1980s. Altoids were the highest selling peppermint in the United States by 1997, with annual sales of 40 million tins.

Unilever effectively acquired all the popular ice cream brands in most developed countries and kept the original brand names while replacing their logos with the Heartbrand logo. The company was founded by two Scottish brothers, Richard Callard and John Bowser, in 1779 in Maryhill, Glasgow during the Scottish Enlightenment period. Callard and Bowser was owned by Arthur Guinness & Sons from 1953 to 1982 when it was acquired by the American conglomerate Beatrice Foods. Who owns Callard and Bowser? The irreverent, quirky personality of Altoids mints has led Altoids to be a top-selling mint in the U.S. Ingredients: Sugar, Gum Arabic, Natural Flavor (Oil Of Peppermint), Gelatin.Callard & Bowser-Suchard Inc. is today a New York-based subsidiary of Mars-Wrigley. It produces Altoids, a brand created by the original Scottish firm. There are limitations. The more natural and organic you are, the shelf life is reduced,” said Reeves. The company produces three different varieties – nougat with vanilla, almond and pistachio, nougat with almond, pistachio, cherries infused with rosewater and nougat with roasted cashew nuts and gelatin-free rose Turkish delight. Jacqueline and Andrew, who previously worked in IT, recently took on four new members of staff to help with the production of their confectionery.

Callard & Bowser came about in 1837 formed by Daniel Callard and his brother-in-law, J. Bowser. They were most famous for their creamline toffees. They flourished and even acquired other manufacturers of dessert sweets such as William Nuttal of Doncaster and Smith - Kendon, and subsequently, became part of the Terrys-Suchard group. It was later folded into the Kraft Jacobs Suchard Group, which formed part of the Philip Morris Group until 2004. Callard & Bowser brand was later taken over by William Wrigley Junior’s Company. The company ceased all production of candy with the exception of 2 current brands - Altoids and Lifesaver - brands we know well today. This is the only known photograph of the line left. Callard & Bowser delicious nougat in a box. 6 Individually wrapped pieces with lovely glace cherries and almonds wrapped in edible rice paper wrapped in a nice silver paper-foil. Such a treat, a novelty, a luxury. Nougat is traditionally made from whipping together honey, egg whites and almonds. Champion & Reeves use an orange blossom honey, roasted pistachios and almonds that have been blanched to remove the bitter taste that can be caused by the skins. “It’s a very soft nougat because of the amount of honey we put in it, that’s what makes it special,” says Jacqueline, who previously worked in financial services. Daniel Callard employed 41 people by 1881. He had passed control of the business to his son, James Percival Callard (1859 – 1940), by 1891.Finally, German nougat, also known as “Viennese Nougat”, is generally made with only sugar, chocolate, and almonds. The nougat in candy bars typically is not made with sugar, but rather uses sucrose and corn syrup, then aerated hydrolyzed soya protein or gelatin, instead of egg whites. Callard and Bowser formerly marketed a popular line of English toffees, which was discontinued between 2001 and 2003. [1] I used to love this nougat as a child and was so disappointed when the company stopped making it. Does anyone remember this, it was a soft nougat containing nuts and turkish delight and was delicous. I would expect within the next six months a number of small artisan companies will approach us to pan products in milk and dark chocolate,” said the cofounder.
