SIGMA APO Tele Converter 1.4x and 2x are dedicated to Tele Converter lenses, which should be used with only listed lenses. we don't care about the aperture mechanism here, because action pics are always shot wide open." I assume PRM knows what he's doing. I don't know whether the perceived delay has to do with the aperture. The other thing I’d say is if you’re regularly shooting shorter than 300mm is there are a number of excellent options at shorter focal lengths including two 70-200/2.8’s from Sony and one 70-180/2.8 from Tamron. Not to mention a couple of 135/1.8’s also native with excellent performance.

There are markings to easily align the camera to portrait mode when needed. It helped things go much faster. Build Quality The OS is genuinely good, not just a promise as with the Variable Reliability system. Not true that it has no CA - it's there but it's blue-yellow, which is much less noticeable than magenta-green, and is a non-issue in practice, even against the light. like how they only used four screws to attach the z-mount lens mount to the camera body, while the other brands used five or six screws? I think it’s totally hilarious you posted this in a Nikon article but you keep spewing about Nikon in this Sony article. As a less-costly alternative to the camera manufacturer's telephoto lenses, Sigma, a manufacturer best known for its line of consumer camera lenses, offers three "big glass" telephoto and super-telephoto lenses in its professional grade "EX" series. After spending a few days in the field with their 300/2.8 HSM EX lens and an opportunity to closely examine it, I offer the following commentary and subjective review.Weighing in at a whopping 3390g and measuring 29cm in length, the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM S is a very big and heavy lens indeed, esepcially as that weight doesn't include the supplied tripod collar. As seen in the photos below, it dwarves even a full-frame camera like the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. This is not a lens that you can hand-hold for very long, being much more at home mounted on a sturdy tripod or monopod. You can bet that any new Sigma super tele would be way more expensive than the old Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 also. Inflation has been very high overall, in particular the price of raw materials. My bet is at least double the price. I agreed to the comments of m8o, his review is a very good one. Focus is fast but sometimes just wouldn't autofocus with the subject right in-front of you. Furthermore, do not expect you can get good image quality with a 2x tele-converter with this lens, thus becoming a 600mm lens. I have tried the orginal Sigma 2x or Kenko AF 7 elements 2x, the image quality just not up to my expectation. I have tried the Pentax FA*300mm f2.8 with a 2x, the IQ is far much much more better. But of course, to be fair, this Sigma is much more cheaper than the Pentax. If using the Sigma as a 300mm f2.8 lens without any tele converter, then it is great and really worth for its price. Focuses well enough, but not quite 'ultimate performance' as I wasn't able to catch running gazelles or wildebeests running to or from me too well. It auto focuses much slower when you engage the manual focus ring as well. If you slid the focus rind forward so manual focus is disengaged, it's much faster.

Mike, PL is largely correct about viewing standards. Most photos are consumed on small screen mobile devices.Sports and Wildlife photographers would love this lens. The best thing is, I did not care about the weight after a while. It was fun to shoot with. Please Support The Phoblographer test the reactions of photographers to confirm that super teles without built-in TCs aren’t relevant any more, With G Master lenses we always include the latest, innovative technologies. We never compromise. Always the latest technologies […] Basically we’re targeting the best of the best. Without compromise. Every time we plan to make a G Master series lens, we aim for ‘no competition’. Which means the highest spec. We don’t compromise on anything. Autofocus, image quality, light weight. What I mean by that is we develop new technologies every time.’ Because at Sony they enjoy reading the exchanges between two obviously very insecure self appointed Sony ambassadors and one persistent and very eager nonSony member who relishes instigation of the angst over releases none of them will likely ever gain actual experience with. We haven't yet reviewed the Sony offering in this category, but it's the most expensive of them all.
