Tatsuki Fujimoto never gets bogged down by the typical pretenses of the genre, so his work feels like a breath of fresh air. Questionable motivations aside, he has a heart of gold, is more intelligent than he gives himself credit (as so many kids are), and grows a LOT over the course of the series, which is of course part of the joy of reading it.
