About this deal

As a user, I have always admired Bill Evans' ability to evoke emotions through his playing, and the "Treasures" album is a testament to this prowess. Recently been getting into vinyl over the last year, I’ve been expanding my collection and I’m glad I’ve gotten into it. In the orchestral version of ‘Time Remembered’, Evans’s piano pairs with the orchestra; the only difference is the timbre of individual instruments as they function as extensions of each other. And so it is with these previously unissued ‘solo, trio and orchestra recordings from Denmark (1965–1969)’ on which all of those tunes appear plus a few other Evans favourites, with four versions of Time Remembered alone.

There are some highlights here and there but overall this 3LP set feels a little lackluster and lifeless. Evans seems not to distinguish between notes and chords; they are all a means of expression and reflections of each other. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used, except with the prior written permission of Condé Nast. Interestingly, there's an emphasis throughout this double set on Evans’ own compositions, which might be a reflection of his confidence during this period. In marked contrast is an unaccompanied solo set from Bill Evans (Copenhagen, November 1965), a fine blend of the introspective ballads one would expect of Evans with less expected moments of forceful swinging – even in the same tune, such as on a brisk version of My Funny Valentine (a standard on which a lesser musician might have been tempted to wallow in sentimentality).

An official Elemental Music release in collaboration with the Bill Evans Estate, Treasures is truly a ’holy grail’ discovery culled from the private collection of Danish jazz musician Ole Matthiessen and being released for the very first time as a limited-edition 180-gram 3-LP set. This compilation holds immense value, as it represents an opportunity to experience the authentic essence of Evans' artistry on a tangible medium.type": "paragraph"}, {"id": "Zn71O0y_5N", "data": {"text": "Highlights of the collection include trio performances from 1965 featuring legendary Danish jazz bassist Niels-Henning \u00d8rsted Pedersen; the only solo piano version of 'My Funny Valentine' by Evans known to exist; a 1966 orchestral suite performed with the Evans trio accompanied by the Danish Radio Big Bandconducted by trumpeter/arranger Palle Mikkelborg; and much more! It runs counter to some recent Evans reissues by featuring an array of instrumental configurations, and it’s a strong showcase of how he adapted his playing to reflect the settings. Listening to the trio on this version, Evan’s playing responds by adding more bounce, which speaks to bass and drums and takes nothing away from the emotion he displayed in his solo version of the song. While the ’60s and ’70s were a time of rupture in jazz, with the rise of free improv and fusion, Evans mostly worked within relatively narrow parameters—acoustic post-bop played with trios, some solos, a few duos, an occasional date with a larger band.

Treasures is kind of like four mini-albums in one: You get a taste of Evans in a pickup trio, another with him and one of his most reliable collaborators, a suite for orchestra, and then an excellent solo set. All About Jazz has been a pillar of jazz since 1995, championing it as an art form and, more importantly, supporting the musicians who create it. Eddie Gomez was the longest serving bassist of any Bill Evans Trio (1966–77), and Marty Morell a longstanding member too (1968–75), so it’s interesting to hear them performing with Evans relatively early on. The second indicator of a worthwhile investment is that the credits in the booklet include two people who worked on ‘sound restoration’ – and given that the recordings are from tapes of sixties radio broadcasts, they’ve done a good job.Highlights of the collection include trio performances from 1965 featuring legendary Danish jazz bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen; the only solo piano version of 'My Funny Valentine' by Evans known to exist; a 1966 orchestral suite performed with the Evans trio accompanied by the Danish Radio Big Bandconducted by trumpeter/arranger Palle Mikkelborg; and much more! I'm going to give it another chance - just compared to some of the other jazz RSD releases, this one was one of the most expensive and the least rewarding.

These recordings capture the trios at the height of Evans’s foray into leading a trio that listened and responded to each other rather than the supportive musicians leaning back and accompanying the piano. As with so many great jazz pianists, there is a thin line between Jazz and classical music in their playing, and nowhere is this more accurate than in Evans’s playing.
