About this deal

It follows 16-year-old Cynthia, a young Black girl from London, as her family move to the countryside after her brother is brutally murdered. She is a contributing editor at Grazia and a presenter on Lorraine, and her writing has appeared in the Guardian, Harper’s Bazaar, Stylist, Metro and Huffington Post. Her debut book I Am Not Your Baby Mother - about being a black British mum - published in May 2020 by Quercus, and made the Sunday Times Bestseller list. Because I was raised in South London in Brixton, I didn’t really understand racism – wherever I looked there were black people.

She has recently experienced the traumatic and tragic loss of her brother, and the story somewhat centres around the family as they learn to navigate around their immense grief and missing family member. I mean, I’m a White woman and not a mother (not from choice) and I can see that’s something that should be standard. You learn so much through subtle character interactions or minor details in the background of a scene and I adore that attention to detail. The meme speaks to my soul because in the last few years especially, manifestation, tarot reading, meditation, yoga, crystal work – everything that could possibly be tied to the practice of the LOA – has had a serious Goop moment. I loved the grace Candice gave both parents and how she handled the cultural differences that have a funny way of playing out when a family is dealing with stronger forces than they are used to.London is all Cynthia knows, but a traumatic incident means her family relocate to the middle of nowhere leaving Cynthia feeling adrift. At her new school, Cynthia immediately finds herself caught between two brothers - head boy Thomas, who is white, and his adopted Black brother, Isaac.

But I must admit there are certain part of this book is a little bit cringy but I think it was intentional by Brathwaite. Up until I was about five, I had been delighted to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar or Titch, but when I first came across Amazing Grace, I remember the warmth that grew in my tummy. Through ‘Cuts Both Ways’, Candice has captured the reality of many young people in London and other cities marred by gun and knife crime.
