About this deal

Today we are going to be looking at Dead Men Tell No Tales, a cooperative board game published by Minion Games. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Despite its visual appearance, Dead Men Tell No Tales’ fire die adds a puzzle element to the experience. The number of treasures players need to retrieve scales nicely with the number of players without increasing the difficulty.

The randomness of the ship tiles and the loot tokens make it a different challenge every time you sit down to play it. They must battle the flames, the skeleton crew, and their own fatigue if they hope to make it out alive. In my opinion one of the biggest justifications I look for with games is re-playability and this has it in abundance. It’s a simple addition, but improves the experience of the game by giving players greater flexibility on how they want to plan their turns as a group. While Minion Games doesn’t publish a high quantity of titles, the ones they do release are usually well produced. We aim to reply within 1 hour, however depending on the number of queries it may take us slightly longer to get back to you!

The tokens normally have a bad guy on one side, and either treasure or a beneficial item on the other. Until it was on the table, I couldn’t see how Dead Men Tell No Tales would meet my expectations, but instead I found it surpassed them. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.Moving around the ship can cause fatigue; whenever a pirate moves to a more fiery location he takes fatigue based on the increase.

While we did have a pretty good time playing Dead Men Tell No Tales, it was noticeable right away that this game felt very similar to other co-op board games we’ve played. A variety of things can happen from these cards, including spawning deck hands and increasing the fire level. The number of deckhands can also effect the pirates ability to travel around the ship as when deckhands are in numbers of three or more, then the pirates cannot pass through the room with which they dominate without defeating them first.

If too many treasure pieces have exploded, and therefor there are not enough to meet the game’s goal.

This has been remedied in the expansion with new tokens which can be placed over the exploded barrels. The pirate players use five action points (and any special abilities) to move around the ship to fight fires, swap items, fight the skeletons and more. Time and money have clearly been spent on details such as the fire-coloured dice and wooden deckhand skulls. You can figure out as a team who needs the actions the most based on who needs help and who can get a lot of loot right now.

There are two types of wooden pieces in this game, the player’s wooden meeples which look like pirates, and the deck hands which are adorable little skulls. Tile placement appears inconsequential at first (the only rule being that doorways match up) but precision is required because of the precarious trapdoor tokens. The cardboard is thick and linen-textured, the wooden components are well cut, and the cards are a sturdy gloss. We did find that we overlooked a few of the small rules from time to time when we first added the expansion as there was a lot to remember, but this wasn’t a huge game changer and as it’s a co-op game it doesn’t affect the balance too much.
