Pedersen thinks that this eternal covenant has been misunderstood, both its content and its basis, and argues for a new understanding of it. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. However, God promised that He would provide a Savior who would overcome the consequences of the Fall.And as a novice in the world of Schleiermacher myself, I would also hope that other newcomers would take up the task of learning from Pedersen’s book, even if it demands much patience and diligence.

Thou hast heard it; hast thou received it in thy heart, and laid hold on it; then thou art one of those in the covenant. Being with your partner may feel like rainbows and unicorns, but that doesn't mean you have a healthy, functioning relationship. With regard to Christ, his precious blood shed in Gethsemane, in Gabbatha and Golgotha, is the fulfillment of the covenant.

Hesed is a unique term describing a covenant relationship in which both parties are bound to be loyal and faithful to each other. Thus have I, as fully as time permits this morning, discussed the first point concerning the covenant. Baptism is the gate that leads to becoming joint heirs to all the promises given anciently by the Lord to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their posterity.

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. Instead, I want to highlight an important insight Pedersen stresses in his book that I think is well worth repeating, especially as it relates to how we should read Schleiermacher. The tribe of Joseph, through his and Asenath’s sons, Ephraim and Manasseh (see Genesis 41:50–52; 46:20), was given the responsibility to lead in the gathering of Israel, to prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord. I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never turn away from doing good to them, and I will put My fear in their hearts, so that they will never turn away from Me.
