People who successfully link job card together will do well but the board state can change so much so quickly that it’s hard to plan ahead. I also appreciate how the secret bidding is handled by putting your chosen amount in the lid of your suitcase before the whole table reveals their bid simultaneously. However, there’s a small problem; at the end of each act you have to pay tribute to Don Corleone by discarding down to the indicated number of cards, and considering this is a game where you’ll collect oodles of cards having to get rid of some is a challenging prospect. You’ll be doing this through four acts (each named after the movie’s acts) by plopping down thugs and family members who’ll shake down businesses and exert their influence over the city.

But as is the case with games with well thought out interaction, because these actions are not once-per-game take that moments, it feels a bit less mean when everyone's doing it—it's nothing personal, just the way the game is played.

Like Lang's other designs, this is a simple game, but it consists of multiple subtle layers that interact. As money cards can’t be exchanged, knowing when to spend your turn banking some dollars is crucial – but overloading on top-value cards makes you a prime target for a robbery, especially as every card hoarded must be revealed to the entire table before vanishing into the metal tin. His skill has led to this being a solid, enjoyable cardboard recreation of The Godfather that combines a few different mechanics into a satisfying set of decisions, and perhaps the best compliment I can give to Corleone’s Empire is that it’s actually quite easy to learn, yet its mechanics hide some genuine depth, making it a really good choice for folks just getting into playing board games. Stashing cash away is especially important, as any money left in your hand could be claimed by Don Corleone at the end of a round. Furthermore, since businesses only have a single space for thugs there’s always a rush to grab resources for jobs before another player gets to them, although I did find the game to be a bit too generous with how easy it was to acquire the blood money, weapons and booze needed to complete jobs.

The cards depicting the various illicit goods you grab throughout the game also look utterly boring.

The colouring of the board is not over the top, and I like how the artwork is almost blurred as it means it isn’t too distracting.
