About this deal

As the school bully, Richard is a somewhat unlikeable character, so I struggled to sympathize with him. Two young women are missing, their only connection a party they both attended, hosted by a notorious real-estate magnate. The dark nature of Scandinavian crime thrillers is not lost on the reader, nor is the seamlessness of the translation. A deeply troubled, damaged, narcissistic and thoroughly irredeemable individual, even though we get to understand Prim, there’s no way you’ll feel sympathy for this one. There are some creepy moments; how could there not be with someone being sucked into a phone, but I was hoping this would be heavy on the fright.

But there is more to this case than meets the eye and the clock is ticking down to find the other missing girl, before the body count rises. It’s a very strange and rag-tag team that he has around him to investigate the case, a dying psychologist, a taxi driver turned drug dealer, and a cop currently on suspension on suspicion of skimming drugs himself, but somehow, against all of the odds, they really do work well together. Killing Moon opens in Los Angeles, where our hero is trying to drink himself to death due to one too many skeletons in the closet.

Hole wants nothing to do with policing or crime solving, though he finds himself in the middle of a mess, as a personal acquaintance has a massive loan out through some less than ideal means. Yes, as with all books mid to late series, you have to accept that there will be some spoilers along the way. In addition, shortly before they disappeared, Bertine and Susanne attended a party thrown by Røed - a party where liquor and cocaine flowed freely. Hole is an alcoholic chain-smoker who routinely insults his peers and alienates his colleagues, framed as the ultimate outsider on the hunt for justice. Exploring all the leads, Harry is able to make some headway, but realises that this is one serial killer with their own impetus for action.Jo, who is midway through a book tour of the UK, Canada and the US for the release of Killing Moon, is also an executive producer for The Jealousy Man, based on one of his short stories. In 2019 we left Harry Hole in the last book of the series Knife with his darkest personal challenge yet but here finally comes a Harry Hole worth case again. This section is mind-blowing, similar to what I have come to expect from the brilliant mind of Catriona Ward.

But like many bands for example know, the quality of your product decreases when there's nowhere left to go. The premise of this is interesting - the book starts with Harry in another country drinking himself to death, but I can think of two other books which start in the same way. Make no mistake: you’re not coming to the Harry Hole series expecting high literature, even if its author is infatuated with Shakespeare and underground alternative bands of the 1980s and ’90s. By Act II, I was sort of ticked that it took a particular sharp turn, then by Act III, I was over it completely.Although I have given his more recent books good ratings, they did not seem to be of the same quality as his earlier efforts.
