Somewhat hidden on the rugged east coast, the islanders have been making fine smoky whiskies there since 1846.

As we’ve discussed before, Caol Ila remains a hidden gem, to the extent that those exist anymore in our information-saturated world of whisky. The Caol Ila single malt brand was revived in 2002 however, with the re-introduction of a 12 year old distillery bottling, alongside this 18 year old and a cask strength release. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In my experience, Caol Ila 18 and 25 both benefit significantly from sitting in an opened bottle for a few months.It’s clearly been aged in ex-bourbon casks for its 18 years of maturation, but were they refill casks? However, one of the thibgs Zi love about Caol Ila is how well it shows at a comparatively younger age. Four versions of Caol Ila would be bottled first (vintage and cask strength limited editions), followed by a 43% 14 year old. Caol Ila 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky has spiced, peaty, sea air notes, peppery flavours and a complex well-rounded finish.The "Growing/vinification type" designation covers certified wines produced by biodynamic or organic methods, sustainably produced wines, and "environmentally friendly" wines that are not officially certified. Caol Ila distillery was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson, who was bought out from the venture a little over 10 year later by Bulloch Lade. Caol Ila (pronounced "Cull Eela") is Gaelic for "The Sound of Islay", the strait that separates the Hebridean islands of Islay and Jura. This is what we have here with this 18 year old, American oak hogshead-matured, natural cask strength single malt. Long-time reader Jamie was kind enough to send me another sample, this time from his recent purchase of a bottle of Caol Ila 18 year (purchased in 2019).
