Velvety soft and smooth to sip, there’s zero aggression to this mellow little number – just a little gentle heat from the alcohol. An oily cheese is an obvious match, but we’re also partial to sipping this slightly chilled, alongside a mince pie. Dow’s are known for their superbly concentrated wines; intense and tannic when young, maturing to a superlative racy elegance with violet and mint aromas. On the palate, fresh and youthful with raspberry and cherry flavours combined with a long and intense finish. Luxurious and silky on the palate, Dow’s 30 Year Old Tawny is extremely refined with flavours of quince and citrus and a stylish, lingering dry finish with nuances of tea leaf.

A special Christmas blend of rich, vibrant ports, Dow’s Christmas Port is carefully matured in oak vats and produced in limited quantities. Available by the bottle or case, your wine gift will be individually tailored with a personal message, tasting notes and vintage description. The nose is just beginning to evolve into musky, dried plum and raisin aromas with whiffs of tree bark, nutmeg, cumin and cloves.

The palate is seriously big and voluptuous with medium to high acidity and a medium to firm level of fine tannins.Other dry Portuguese wines include the tart, slightly effervescent Vinho Verde white wine, made in the north, and the bright, elegant reds and whites of the Dão as well as the bold, and fruit-driven reds and whites of the southern, Alentejo. A fine tipple to round off your Christmas celebrations splendidly, especially if served with ripe Stilton.

There’s caramel, honey, a little cinnamon spice, and fruity figs, with of course, a little nuttiness. The Douro valley produces some of the best grapes for Port which is why Dow Fine Ruby Port is made from only the finest hand picked grapes from the Douro’s region. Created by one of the oldest port houses, Quinta ports are bottled after a couple of years in barrel, without filtration, and continue to mature in the bottle. Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, the Symington family has built on the legacy of the preceding Silva and Dow families.

It gradually warms up, revealing marine notes, seaweed and oyster shells tincturing the black fruit.Dows Fine Ruby Port is the youngest of the Dow’s wood-aged Ports, having been aged approximately 3 years in oak cask. It began in 1798 when Bruno da Silva, a Portuguese merchant from Oporto, made a journey which was the opposite to that of the first British merchants. This 2010 vintage is wonderfully fruity with bold berry notes and a creamy finish with a little spice heat, and even a hint of chocolate.
