The Peloton expansion adds a generous collection of new elements without overwhelming the game, a genuinely impressive achievement. And as the racers pass the Flamme Rouge it is clear the Peloton is working hard to reel in the small breakaway that has formed! Peloton adds a slew of new tracks, riders, and variant rules, but as there are no significant gameplay changes I’m going to forgo the usual rules rundown and jump right in.

There are supply zone tiles and a bonus tile which provide a minimum speed of 4 and still allow for slipstreaming. While on the face of things a race game, Flamme Rouge is not simply about going fastest, it’s about timing, positioning, and managing your energy. Firstly it adds two new teams to extend your races up to 6 players, and some wider stretches of track to accommodate these extra riders. Being able to play with 6 players is fantastic, and the game handles the added congestion well with the extra tiles that are included.

But it does make things that much harder: the distance from back of the pack to the front is now that much longer and the previously comfortable two lane roads can become choke points, especially when you come out of one of the new wider stretches. Since play is simultaneous, adding 2 more people hardly extends the length of the game, although it does make the outcome of each round harder to predict.Whilst simple in its design, I would say that this is a 'Must Have' expansion as I wouldn't think of playing without it.

The original game only included rules and components for 2 to 4 players which was a shame as whenever a race was in progress it would attract many people to the table all wanting a go.

Just like riding on real cobblestone streets, it shakes things up in an uncomfortable way and can stymie any hopes of moving ahead or cause you to burn precious movement when you are trapped behind someone else.
