About this deal

I decided it was time to assemble the miniatures from Kill Team: Octarius and try out the new Battlefoam Octarius box inserts. The Octarius book lays out what future expansions might look like, introducing us to a pair of bespoke kill teams with their own faction rules and quirks, with some additional rules for whatever terrain comes packed in the box and some extra missions and narrative play rules. If they do, they are said to have escaped and take no further part in this mission, but do not count as having been incapacitated for any rules reasons. This can only be done on each of your operatives however – but can be done by multiple different operatives.

The Attacker then selects one of these forces: that force is the Relief Force and will not start the battle on the killzone, but will arrive later during the battle. While assembling the orks, I waffled emotionally from feeling they were the worst GW models I've worked with to feeling they were quite cleverly done.

DECOY [1EP]For each operative in your kill team that is equipped with a decoy, you can set up one additional Concealed Deployment marker when you set up your forces. As with your operatives you are encouraged to create some background for your base – is it a strike cruiser in orbit for example, or maybe it’s a mighty Ork Fortress crafted from the destroyed tanks of your enemies? Finally after deployment there is the scouting phase where essentially you pick from Fortify, Infiltrate and Recon each having a different benefit but each also beating a different choice as in rock, paper scissors. For example, the ‘intel’ your Tyranid kill team might have recovered might in fact be the biomatter of a dangerous predator that they wish to bring back to be consumed by the rest of the swarm to make new, even deadlier, organisms.

Each time this action is performed, that objective marker gains 1 Homing Beacon point (we suggest you denote this by placing a differently coloured dice next to that objective marker). In that sense, it’s easy to picture this as a model for future expansions, where we’re given new, more bespoke kill teams as their own standalone factions rather than adding to the options available to other factions. The Spec Ops rules for Veteran Guardsmen and Kommandos here give you Battle Honours that the squads can earn, Rare Equipment they can be outfitted with, Assets to add to your Base of Operations, Requisitions for your team, and two Spec Ops you can choose for your team. It’s also easy to see how this might tie into future 40k campaign settings (where factions are defined in advance), and how it might be used to re-introduce older teams such as the Gellarpox Infected or Elucidian Starstriders (at least, we hope to see them show up again somewhere – those are beautiful models!

Again while we get a list in the book I imagine we will see more warzone or army specific ones added in the future. Finally at the end of the Strategy Phase players can reveal a Tac Ops card – these are the semi-randomised secondary objectives created using the card decks mentioned earlier – the key thing here is that you don’t have to reveal to your opponent what they are, but some can only be scored after revealing them – meaning that you are always guessing what secondaries your opponent might be trying to get into position to score. SERVO-AUGER [1EP]An operative with this equipment can continue to perform actions in a Turning Point even after performing the Recon Vantage Point action. As with most other GW games, Kill Team keeps the “3 ways to play” mantra allowing different play styles. The plastic Krieg kit is a lot more varied than the resin ones from Forge World and give you access to a lot more weapon options than those currently available – just check out that Krieg sniper! In addition to the 10 models they’ll field, they also get to choose one of two Ancillary Support Options .

Sanguinius faced Fulgrim and won, Dorn charged Horus Ascended…and soon regretted it whilst Sigismund took not one, but two heads (Eidolon and Abaddon). If the Defender scores 3 or more VPs from Recon Tac Ops during this battle, they gain 1 additional Requisition point. Also included in the box is a full supplement about the Octarius system – we see a lore section giving us the story so far about Octarian War that I believe we will see play out over the next few months in 40k supplements – Essentially, Inquisitor Kryptman had the idea that the best way to deal with the Orks and Tyranids in that region of space was to draw a hive fleet towards Ork inhabited planets – the plan being that they would destroy each other and thus save humanity. I'm looking forward to it, but I am also looking forward to getting some Aeronatica Imperialis planes done. That said, once past the annoyances, they go together well and look great as I hope my quick snaps illustrate faithfully. MELTA CHARGES [1EP]Each time an operative equipped with melta charges performs the Plant Explosives action, the vital installation suffers 1 additional Damage point. On the whole there’s more here than we expected, particularly compared to the pamphlets that constituted Killzone releases in the prior iteration of Kill Team. Once all the Attacker’s Concealed Deployment markers are set up, the Defender then sets up their entire kill team as normal. If, when you are randomly determining which objective marker should be removed from the tabletop, the objective marker selected has 1 or more Homing Beacon points, reduce the number of Homing Beacon points on that objective marker by 1 and then randomly determine an objective marker again (if this objective marker is randomly selected again, and it still has 1 or more Homing Beacon points on it, repeat this process until you have selected an objective marker with no Homing Beacon points to remove).
