If you are brand new to sewing or want a handy reference book for your essential techniques, then 'Love at First Stitch' by Tilly Walnes is a great place to start. It's perfect for complete beginners, but also has some great patterns in there for anyone with more developed skills. There's been a couple of times when I've looked at a shirt pattern and thought to myself 'I'll just make a Mimi' instead, because I know it is achievable.
