About this deal

At Dramface we like to include more than just Scottish perspectives, and everyone benefits from a little variety in their whisky opinions, don’t you think? As far as colour is concerned, they both have the same identical dirty chardonnay white wine straw colour.

A cask strength, peated single malt from the Isle of Arran distillery in Lochranza on the Isle of Arran. Never mind what I say, or what Mark says, or what Jason says, or what the people actually paid to do this stuff say. On the palate, this is a robust dram, with the typical orchard fruits of Arran coming to the fore over a layer of toasted brioche and red berries. It's on my list the next time I get to the UK, please G-d soon when the war is over and all my sons come home safe and sound, Be'ezrat Hashem. It is interesting that the two releases share identical packaging and artwork with one minor exception. The Spirits Embassy has been brought to you by award winning online retailer Single Malts Direct, who have over 15 years experience in carefully selecting the rarest and finest whiskies from every corner of the world. That’s not just some romantic fluff like the marketing myths strung together in Edrington’s fairytale factory. Back to eating al desko, back to early alarms, back to Work In Progress meetings, back to more bad news about Brexit.

Nose: Rich sweet spiced notes from a well matured Arran Single Malt, backed with the strength of peat smoke and ripe citrus fruits.

Smoke curls in and out; the effect is of charred wood onto which barbecued meat has dripped its fat. Despite its reputation as a somewhat traditional spirit, Scotch whisky offers incredible diversity of flavour, with single malts and blends ranging from elegant, floral expressions to rich, fruity and chocolatey drams.

To diversify their range and to offer something to the peat-heads, Arran also distils peated malt and sells it under the Machrie Moor name. The possibility to taste the Machrie Moor 10 side by side with the Arran 10 and to compare them was very appealing as both whiskies differed only in peat at first sight. It wasn't until 1994 when Arran Whisky starting building their distillery in Lochranza at the north end of the island. The Machrie Moor 10 has a prominent note of a smouldering bonfire and there’s a taste of mango to it that I also get in other peated whiskies.

This peated Arran Single Malt displays all the freshness of the classic island house style, with an added puff of smoke and earthiness. The holiday’s over; the brief plunge into Arran’s pseudo-reality well and truly in the rearview mirror. On the nose it is much less pleasing and less elegant than the 10-year-old Machrie Moor with 46% (there are really very few parallels), but on the palate there is still a surprise or increase. Bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring, this peated Arran Single Malt displays all the freshness of our island house style, with an added puff of smoke and earthiness.Palate – A robust dram with the typical orchard fruits of Arran coming to the fore over a layer of toasted brioche and red berries. As expected, it is impeccably distilled but the smokey peatiness adds a new level - I almost said thrill - to a superb product.
