About this deal

The selection of books listed below are pitched at different levels of hobbyist, but most should be somewhat accessible to all. I wanted a fast, light read for myself - hence this option, which is absolutely perfect for KS2 readers with an interest in the obscure.

From award-winning Nordic author and illustrator Linda Bondestam comes a new kind of climate change story, narrated by an adorable axolotl who is—possibly—the last of its kind. Jess Keating really has a way with words, and this nonfiction book shows her writing chops off here as she celebrates 17 different species that are considered cute. At the time of writing this review (December 2007) there is a paperback edition due for publication. In the narrative, things start changing for the worse when the tiger salamanders mature and move out of the lake. Thankfully, plenty of folks agree, including the developers of Minecraft, who introduced an axolotl mob to the game in 2021 to bring attention to this salamander’s current path to extinction and encourage conservation efforts. This newest installment of Keating’s “The World of Weird Animals” continues the winning formula of Pink Is for Blobfish and What Makes A Monster?

Handbook of Salamanders: the Salamanders of the United States, of Canada and of Mexico", 1943, 1994, Cornell University Press. Guaranteed to answer all of your questions, this ebook is a must have for any owner of this fascinating pet.

A well placed appendix describing the science of cute rounds out the end of book information which includes a glossary. I looked up several words while reading: stoat, nudibranch, benthic; and also learned several new ones: patagium, counter-illumination, and countershading. This is a hefty/heavy hardback book that makes Petranka's book seem like "light" reading (light as in light as a paperback in comparison). It is important for students to know this because informational texts are great resources for doing projects or simply satisfying curiosities. Unfortunately the book went into some simple detail about axolotls being eaten which caused my son (obsessed with axolotls) to become really upset and cry his heart out. This is the kind of book that is great fun to page through, quote from to unsuspecting nearby people, and savor the bits of knowledge. There was a lot of good information about lesser known animals (who just so happen to be cute) - both narrative and informational text with sidebars and pictures. My kids are a bit young for the target audience here so probably upper elementary kids would not have a problem with it. The aliens are adorable, and provide a second story while the reader waits to see what happens with each animal family.

The experience sparked her interest in exotic pets, a subject she continues to pursue with avid interest. The book has received acclaim in Europe, where it won the Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize. Using mixed media, Bondestam creates rich, layered illustrations featuring animals all across the globe…. This time out Keating has been busy "Discovering the World's Most Adorable Animals," as the subtitle announces. All of these animals are cute, but they've also adapted remarkable ways to survive in their unique environments. By reflecting the small in the big, the reader can recognize and get involved in the fragile globe that we all live on whose future concerns us all. Combining her irresistible visual wit with exquisite aquatic art and rare empathy, Linda Bondestam brings us a story of catastrophe that bursts with life. If not, you are about to be enchanted by these charming creatures, with their adorable baby faces and extraordinary ability to regenerate limbs and organs. Axolotls are among the most successful animals used in laboratory settings, and their genome might hold the key to curing cancer and other diseases.
