As the week winds on, the normally easygoing Olive finds feelings of loneliness and resentment throwing her out of whack. The book opens with Stella, a young Métis mother, witnessing a violent attack on some land near her house. is not only an extensive compilation of tea pastries, it is also a journey around the world through its most iconic cookies.

Vermette is skilled at writing with a language that is conversational and comfortable and with a poetic ease that makes the hard things easier to swallow.

Her children's picture book series The Seven Teachings Stories was published by Portage and Main Press in 2015. There is no way any review I give The Break will fully do it justice, and I am still feeling a little blindsided by the revelations of the last 50 pages, but suffice it to say that this is going to be THE BOOK to read this fall. I know the speech and could do a word-perfect recitation, but closing her down when she’s in full flow is next to impossible.In the end, the perpetrator is apprehended (the identity of the one who committed the crime is never in doubt for the reader), but Vermette seems to indicate, it is not the serving of justice but traditional aboriginal beliefs and rituals that will bring whatever healing is to be found.
