Velocity mode also allows you to control the volume of your samples according to how hard you hit your pads. The shorter loop lengths make for instant gratification, because Loop Roll triggers a loop for as long as you hold down a pad, after which the track playback continues (as if you were in Slip Mode).

Pressing the pads plays the slices in looped fashion until you release the pad and playback resumes. Besides the mixer and transport controls that will be handled from your other Serato DJ unit, the SP-1’s deck sections cram enough performance controls into them to dominate much of your attention while DJing. Add in full control of Serato DJ’s effects deck, a Serato Video license, and Serato Video control, and this is a hands-down sound piece of gear.

This is a great way to add some expressive riffing to your set with little consequence for mistakes. There are 2 Slicer modes: in the first mode, the track playback continues, and a new sliced section is created as playback passes by the old one. Slip Mode – Pioneer included a Slip Mode function that enables continuous music playback in the background even when loops and hot cues are being performed.

The layout is similar to Pioneers’ well known controller range for ease of use and familiarity amongst DJs. The DDJ SP1 also combines Deck and Shift select buttons to show the FX, SP-6, and Record parts of your Serato DJ software. Sampler Volume Fader - In between the the performance pads is a volume slider to control output of the trigger pads.In multi-effects mode, the 1-3 buttons and encoders work to turn effects on/off, select the effect from a list, and adjust effect amount. The Pioneer DDJ-SP1 Controller for Serato DJ is an add-on DJ controller designed for professional and intermediate DJs. If there is something to nitpick about the DDJ-SP1 is that it could have used more options to manipulate effects instead of just a single volume fader, though it assumes you’re already using a DJ mixer that has EQs and perhaps other FX onboard such as filters and modulation effects like in Pioneer DJ’s DJM mixer range.

Until now I was using a mix of LPD8 and CMD DC1 but it's wonky and I'm not quite happy with it so I went back to looking what's available and found the SP1 which I had missed at the time.

The Pioneer DDJ-SP1 is a great addition for DJs who are looking for more control in their Serato DJ-powered rig, and can also be used standalone with CDJs though the functionality is limited. Deliver effective finger drum performances with simple control of the sampler volume at your fingertips. This midi controller is perfectly tuned to work with Serato software; however, you can also remap the 16 included pads to work with other software too. Another added bonus is that the DDJ-SP1 can work with the Melodics app, which is helpful for DJs that want to learn a little more about pad drumming techniques and building muscle memory.
