About this deal

During Gen Con 2022, I spoke with the team at Portal and I thought it would be cool to round out the set by taking a look at Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North, a 2019 standalone game based in the same Imperial Settlers universe.

You can imagine our shock that Imperial Settlers doesn’t have a dice game version, but the night is young. At the bottom of the card is the card’s title along with text which specifies which type of card the card is, the name of the card, and what the card actually does. The wooden resource bits are appropriately shaped, which is always more enjoyable to play with than simple wooden cubes. In Empires of the North, players play until someone reaches the 25-point mark, triggering the end game. We are a group of passionate individuals who share our love of board games through written and video reviews, articles, and humor, so that others can join us in our journey. Disclosure: Meeple Mountain received a free copy of this product in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. There is an advance mode in the game which allows you to draw the buildings from your village sheet onto your empire sheet, which allows you to multiply the value of those bonuses. I’ll get to the various actions in a little bit and will refer to this as ‘the common action’ when I do so.

But, as each round goes by and your empire begins to inflate and expand, the action really ramps up and it becomes a challenge to try to squeeze as much out of the turn as possible. It offers 48 unique Village sheets – all with different buildings – so each time you play, you are challenged with a different situation. It takes a minimum of two raze tokens to destroy an enemy’s building, and you usually won’t have that. At the end of the game, players add the VP value of their Locations to their current VP score to reach their total score. The cards in the game are very nicely illustrated, and special abilities on the cards are very clear and easy to understand.

Choosing the faction is only the first step, though, as each faction can be played using one of the two separate and unique decks. My advice would be to skip over the basic mode and go straight to the ‘advanced’ mode as it really isn’t that much more advanced and honestly I think it would be a fair bit duller without it.I'm looking for a replayable engine builder which doesn't get repetitive but I'm not sure which of the three would have the best replayability since they all have factions/clans - do they each get repetitive once you have played a clan/faction once or twice and you've seen each clan's/faction's cards? And as a bonus the box is designed as a handy dice tray which was actually great for when we played on the sofa, away from the table!

Almost all of the reviews on Board Game Quest are from review copies of a game provided by the publisher. I’m a huge fan of Imperial Settlers, so my hopes were maybe a little too high in the case of Empires of the North. Place a Defense token: this is a free action and does not count towards a player’s ‘one action per turn’ limit. We’ve seen a few questions floating around about how the Technology Tokens interact and there have been a few different interpretations.Stars – The next evolution of Imperial Settlers brings us a great engine building game with a lot of variety between the different clans. We can make use of the wood we got from razing our brewer to plant a ‘Primeval Forest’ – this is one of our faction buildings. There are only five rounds in the game, and every single one of them needs you to play at least as perfectly as your opponent. I feel like the replayability of this game is mainly for solo gamers, which unfortunately isn’t something I do. I’ve decided I will choose articles I like the most and republish them to present them to all new board game fans that joined our hobby meanwhile!
