Michter's has three locations in Kentucky: Michter's distillery in the Shively section of Louisville, the architecturally significant Fort Nelson Distillery located on Louisville's Museum Row, and Michter's Springfield Farm. Originally known as Shenk’s and later as Bomberger’s, the whiskey company which ultimately became known as Michter’s was founded by John Shenk, a Swiss Mennonite farmer, in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania in 1753. The green handled bottle makes it stand out from the crowd but it’s the perfumed flavour and orange-rich character which really make this gin sing. It is this great heritage that we honor with the release of Bomberger’s Declaration and Shenk’s Homestead which comprise our Michter’s Legacy Series.Very rich and fruity on the nose, with sumptuous notes of dried fruit, raisins and barley sugar, countered by brioche and fennel. Each batch of this whiskey is batched in a holding tank fit for a maximum of twenty full barrels, leaving no margin for imperfection and ensuring that this is a true “small batch” bourbon. The whiskey is first matured in new charred white oak barrels, as usual, but before bottling is transferred to special heavily toasted, lightly charred finishing barrel. Magliocco, who entered the wine and spirits industry after attending Yale College and graduating from Harvard Law School, was intimately familiar with Michter’s through his college days of imbibing and bartending and later through his work selling Michter's in New York. Tremendous attention is given to every step in the production process including details like yeast selection, fermentation, distillation, wood selection and drying of staves, toasting and/or charring barrels, barreling proof, temperature and air flow conditions in the rick house where the barrels are aged, identifying the peak of maturation for bottling, and of course our singular filtration protocol.Appealingly rich notes of barley sugar, raisins and dried fruit, with a balancing touch of fennel seed and baked bread. In 1989, with the entire American whiskey industry suffering a prolonged downturn, Michter’s then-owners declared bankruptcy and abandoned the premises, leaving its Pennsylvania operations in disrepair and the Michter’s name – seemingly – lost to history … were it not for a fortuitous connection to two whiskey lovers with an abiding admiration for the old Michter’s legacy and quality.
