About this deal

A lovely four bedroom semi-detached family home which boasts spacious living accommodation, attractive rear garden and a desirable Gilstead setting. Mottoes first began to be shown with arms in the 14th and 15th centuries, but were not in general use until the 17th century. of Micklethwaite men worked as a General Labourer and 79% of Micklethwaite women worked as an Unpaid Domestic Duties. It is mainly recorded in Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, and sometimes in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. The ancient chronicles of England reveal the early records of the name Micklethwaite as a Norman family name, which ranks as one of the oldest. Mills: Water mills were the main source of power besides oxen: more than 6,000 are recorded in Domesday.

A younger branch settled at Swine in the East Riding, from which descended Joseph Micklethwait JM113 M. The various spellings include Muclewaite, Micklethwait, Micklethwayt, Micklethwaite, Muclethwait, Muclethwaite, Muclethwayte and many more.

There is little doubt that if not all, certainly most of these Micklethwaits are our ancestors because the majority of them originated from the area of Gunthwaite or Cawthorne and Ingbirchworth.

The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as Muceltu(o)it, and derives from two Old Norse words of Mikill and þveit, meaning Great Clearing. Just a stones throw away from some beautiful scenic walks including Ilkley Moor, Baildon Moor, St Ives Country Estate and 5 Rise Locks/Leeds Liverpool Canal. John Thomas Micklethwaite, architect and archaeologist and Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey 1898-1906, is buried in the west cloister of the Abbey. It is reported that Micklethwaite was included in the lands and holdings of Erneis de Buron of the great Norman house of Buron, but we are not sure at this stage to which Micklethwaite this refers.
