About this deal

That child almost succumbs to an asthma attack until he is lifted into the air by a strange and exotic being from another world. Daniel is a huge fan and this trip is not only a long overdue chance to spend time with his father but it’s also an opportunity to visit the set and meet the stars of his favourite TV programme as Francis works on the show and has promised him a guided tour. an impressive exercise in mood and narrative command, with a freezing chill that takes some time to depart from the mind. Okay, we can see that Fran is someone who hates being backed into a corner where he might have to admit a failing.

Wood’s brutal exploration of toxic masculinity urges you on to the bloody climax and leaves you grateful for the palate-cleansing coda that offers a closing note of redemption. The trip would end in tragedy and trauma, and Daniel attempts to deconstruct and analyse the events and his responses to them, with hindsight. This is not a light or an easy read and it's far more than a mere thriller though the tension mounts inexorably through the first part of the book. His debut The Bellwether Revivals (2012) was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award and the Commonwealth Book Prize, and won France's Prix du Roman Fnac. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.Which might well be a recipe for something his mother might have approved of, but it has no basis in Greek drama. Important: Your credit card will NOT be charged when you start your free trial or if you cancel during the trial period. This is a well-written tale, which is full of foreboding, as you know from the beginning that something terrible is going to happen, and yet you can't help hope, like Daniel, that it will be averted. From its bucolic Buckinghamshire beginnings, to its bloody be-bop near-denouement, A Station on the Path to Somewhere Better simply will not let you go.

Benjamin Wood follows up the stunning The Ecliptic with a meditation on fathers and sons, and the lasting effects of horrific acts of violence … I loved Wood’s second novel, and this is a completely different but equally stunning piece of work. If it hadn't had been for Europa Editions publishing this, I most likely would've never come across his work. If I have a major issue with A Station On the Path, it’s that it seems to be reaching for a moral weight with which to invest its horrors that doesn’t appear warranted. In his early forties, he’s moved from the north-west of England to the south-east, where he lives with his family. The acclaimed author of The Ecliptic has written a novel of exceptional beauty about the bond between fathers and sons, and the invention and reconciliation of self—weaving a haunting story of lost innocence and love. His father, Francis, estranged from his mother, is a set builder for the show in Leeds, and promises Daniel a studio visit. Lockdown and being furloughed from work has meant that I have more spare time than ever and therefore more time to read! W]ith his third novel, A Station on the Path to Somewhere Better, Wood’s talent has burgeoned spectacularly.
