About this deal

While some people swear by innovative solutions involving various types of magnets or studs, most people just want something simple that works with standard cycling bottles, and holds on to them securely over even the roughest terrain.

Made from nylon pellets created from recycled fishing nets collected in the coastal communities of Chile, the Bat Cage remains one of Bontrager’s oldest products. And if all else fails, did you know about the existence of such things as the Camelbak Quick Stow Flask? These places tend to cause water bottles to fall out of the cage more frequently, and you don’t want to lose a bottle going over rough terrain.

The Birzman Bottle-Cleat ticks those boxes, but what makes it special is the weight, low cost and the fact that it doesn’t require specialist mounting hardware. Bike riding and water bottles go together like salt and pepper, bacon and eggs, and Saturday nights and awful TV entertainment. You can carry a coffee thermos on your bike using a handlebar-mounted water bottle holder like the Portland Design Works Barista or Portland Design Works Hot Beverage Holder.

Like any other component, bottle cages also come in a variety of different materials – from plastic and aluminium, which tend to be the cheapest, to carbon and titanium, which are inevitably more expensive.

Birzman’s tough 41g Uncage has an unfussy yet attractive design that’s formed from a high-polymer material. That said, it is missing a few essentials like a 6mm hex key, and it’s not quite tough enough to allow enough leverage to budge pedals or tighten linkage bolts. Most bike water cages are designed only to fit this size bottle, but many cages also hold larger bottles. Whilst this one doesn’t have a 8mm allen key which could be very useful on the go, the bigger options do have one! Performance often depends more on the style and construction of the cage, rather than the material it's made of though, so don't assume a carbon bottle cage is better just because it costs more. This gap is also a great way to secure your large bottle further if you’re riding over bumpy terrain or the cage isn’t installed upright, such as under the downtube. Thankfully I’ve found some great recommendations that hold bottles securely and are easy to install.

We used a pair of these water bottles mounted to a Tumbleweed Mini Pannier Rack on a recent bikepacking trip. I’ve found that this method works best when (1) you don’t have any other options (maybe you’re on a bikepacking tour and your cage fixings break), or (2) you fit the cage onto the underside of the downtube or top tube.

We used this cage while bikepacking over 250 miles of rough dirt roads and singletrack, and it held a massive 34-ounce bike water bottle in place the entire time. Lezyne's Road Drive Alloy is a little bit heavier than most, but it does include a Velcro strap and mounts for the Road Drive Mini pump (and works just as well with other, circa 17mm-diameter, mini-pumps). The Essential is made from tough polycarbonate plastic and comes in four glossy colours: black, blue, red and white.
