About this deal

Faced with no alternative Frances comes to the conclusion that although she loves bread and jam she does not want to eat it at every meal.

Dean Carlson for AllMusic praised the album for taking the "darkwave pretensions of Switchblade Symphony's previous material and pushed it through an even more stylized electronic filter.

When her mother mentions that she eats other things in her school lunch, Frances admits to trading her lunches away every day. She prefers to eat the same for dinner that night in lieu of breaded veal cutlets with string beans and baked potatoes. I loved reading this again - there's so many warm and fuzzy memories caught up in the examination of a book you loved as a child, seen through the eyes of the adult. I'm not sure I have ever used the word "delightful" before in a review but here it applies, yes this was delightful and a good story for children and a fine book for adults to read to children. Frances decides she wants to eat only bread and jam at every meal until--to her surprise--her parents grant her wish. Every single word is meticulously chosen, carefully placed on the page, like an artist painting a masterpiece. The only other contender that comes immediately to mind is Badger from The Wind in the Willows but how many American children can remember him off the tops of their heads?Maybe in the future we can do follow-ups with experts, and I could tap you to talk with us more about that.

Even though I don't actually like most of the foods that comprise Frances' particular diet (barring bread and jam, of course), the book always made me really hungry anyway. Author Russell Hoban first wrote about Frances the badger in 1960’s Bedtime for Frances, with illustrations by Garth Williams. I love the rationales Frances provides for not eating certain food "but sunny side up eggs lie on teh plate and look up at you in a funny way and sunny-side-down eggs lie on their stomachs and wait and I love elaborate food descriptions "I have a cream cheese-cucumber-and-tomato sandwich on re bread. I persisted in reading Bread and Jam for Frances, by Russell Hoban, to her even after she lost interest and started standing up and running around on the bed. Then he sprinkled more salt on the egg and went around again… He ate his bunch of grapes and his tangerine…He set the cup custard in the middle of the napkin on his desk… He shut his lunch box, put it back inside his desk, and sighed.I am counting this towards my book total for 2019 because I have reread it so many times in the last month that it probably is equivalent to a mid-size novel at this point.
