It is great for fans of the series though as there are lots of fun facts, references, and set/character images. I need to go back a second time – because I am one of the few it seems, who did not enjoy the experience very much at all. While every attempt is made to deliver goods within the estimated time, some delays are inevitable due to unforeseen factors. Picture yourself Lady Mary while strolling along the gardens, Mrs Patmore while picking out your favourite cakes or step into the upper class that is good old Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, judging everyone who crosses your path while sipping your tea.

As with everything, we were very early, so we decided to have a quick drink at the (aptly named) Rivoli Bar before meeting my aunt and uncle for ‘afternoon tea’. The series ended on such a positive and happy note but I was in tears just saying goodbye to all the wonderful characters. I was looking forward to tea, scones, jam and other lovely things, but the tables were too small for all the food they brought over and worst of all the scones weren’t even warm, they were stale.

I think the hardened afternoon tea aficionado will enjoy the experience but will soon beat a track back to the Savoy (our favourite, although, now becoming quite touristy too), Browns or the Langham which all offer an experience that feels much less like you are just part of an afternoon tea production line to be processed and sent out before the next tourist can be seated. Please note that admission tickets containing families or children CANNOT be offered tickets for "Afternoon Tea at the Castle".The royal family was known to be such avid fans of the square, fruit-filled yeasted bun that the bakery was nicknamed the Royal Bun House. While some used that time to catch up on mending and sewing, others read the newspaper or played cards.

It is more like the North American dinner hour, so avoid disappointment by booking a ”high tea” when you really wanted an afternoon tea. Therefore, at this time, we cannot alter the set menus to cater for any additional dietary requirements. It was a precious choice as well because, unlike jam, the egg-based curd needed refrigeration for long-term storage. However, you do see Mary's and Sybil's bedrooms, as well as many other rooms which you will easily recognize.A major criticism I had – and I can’t believe I’m writing this – but there were perhaps too many cakes (those who know me will know I’m a cake fiend! However, the staff were rude, busy, overworked and the room we were in was small overcrowded and uncomfortable. I would watch Corrie Street and wondered about the big fuss about ”tea” at the end of the day and I never saw a single scone!
