In the hands of a less skilled author something like this could so easily fall flat but Jonasson manages to create a real sense of dangers, particularly with the Count and Countess, the type of couple who never get invited to dinner parties.In addition to these baffling decisions, our characters don’t seem to have any actual obstacles – things tend to work out really well for them whatever they do which doesn’t make for a very exciting read. It’s also a commentary on faith and whether it has any sustaining purpose or whether it’s just a numbing sop to make people feel slightly better about their miserable lives. One of those main characters never quite came together: agnostic, money-grubbing priest Johanna Kjellerman, somewhat sympathetic thanks to her tyrannical minister father who resembled a sketch from a Bergman or Dreyer film.
