About this deal

It is a difficult read also and offers remarkable parallels in places to Drew Barrymore but from another childhood star. She made it though and in by 16 had cleaned up her life, to go on to a string of successes in a series comedies and dramas . It is a sad story of a child whose life was marred by what no child should go through, but who overcame her self-destructive habits and proved those who said she was burned out at 13, so wrong. This is her story of why she took refuge from her unhappy young life in parties, alcohol and drugs, and her difficult and painful rehabilitation.

It gave a lot of insight of what she went through as a child star her issues with drugs and how she came through the ordeal. Being only 15 when she wrote the book she shows courage in sharing these hard times, and I am so glad she did. Drew takes us through her journey of self-destruction, drug and alcohol abuse, and her struggle to become sober and understand herself and her issues better. While it's true Drew had wonderful, skilled and insightful professionals in her hospitalization and recovery, the sickening feeling you get in your stomach is when you helplessly realize that these are tools, life changing tools, but none the less tools. She went through many difficult times with her abusive father, and had a lot of issues with her mother who didn't know how to be a parent and therefore let Drew down in a big way. Drew talks about the support given to her by Steven Spielberg who she says gave her the best advice she ever been given on acting : "Drew, you can't act your character, you gotta be your character. Personally, I had watched a few of Drew's films before getting this book, and had thought her a good actress. Drew Pinsky, Burt Reynolds, Richard Pryor, Louie Anderson, Belinda Carlisle, Sharon Rocha, and Elisabeth Kübler Ross.

Meet me on twitch like a Tomi Lahren vs Trevor Noah debate in early 2016 when people still thought things like that were sassy and noble. I have to say, at one point (in the wee hours the day before my essay was due) looking at Drew through an existential lens almost broke my brain. I was hesitant to read the book at first, not wanting to think of "Gertie" as an underaged drug user and alcoholic. But the love, respect and adoration of wonderful people never could fill the bitter and empty void Drew suffered where family belonged. Drew finally had to recognize her life style was no longer a choice she could keep but was approaching a critical life or death decision.

Drew, as she says, will live the rest of her life on the brink of disaster, from minute to minute and hour to hour. This piece I related to the most, since at first, she so badly wanted her father to be her hero and a faithful, loving father. I only recently stumbled upon the knowledge that Drew Barrymore wrote an autobiography over 20 years ago detailing the issues she encountered with drugs and alcohol at a young age.Drew goes into the details of her hard and emotionally lacking relationship with her parents, and how she struggles with being honest with sobriety at the tender age of 12.
