About this deal

Jenny, the once wild-child and now tamed trophy wife of Ken’s, remains Abby’s best friend, ever since their first year at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Compare and contrast Jenny and Steph’s arcs as they (re-)calibrate their place in this complicated family. This is a wonderfully written family/sibling saga with the language at times being almost lyrical and poetic. I get that Abby acknowledges that she changed her mind once she got pregnant, but it always gives me a sour taste in my mouth when I read that particular plotline because it comes up so often (and I personally just ran into it in back-to-back books) and the alternatives—person who doesn’t want children doesn’t have them and is happy; person who wants children doesn’t/can’t have them and realizes they’re happy without—are not nearly so prevalent. In an effort to ride the wave of clarity and insight that accompany his mania, he self-titrates his medication. I probably won’t go out of my way to recommend it widely, but it was an enjoyable way to spend a few days and I suspect it will make for a good discussion.Having a baby has changed her concept of “family,” and she wants to explore whether to tell the Gardner family this news. Ken a successful but ruthless businessman, providing financial support to not only his family, but his sister alike. Point to some sentences or passages in the beginning of the novel that hint at the siblings’ complex dynamic. It feels a bit jarring and as I’ve already said, we’ve read much better books that communicate the same message (like Odd dog out).

Jenny is now conflicted over where to place her loyalty, and equally at odds over what she has become. Adam hasn’t made this discovery yet, but going off his medication has him convinced that it’s within his grasp. Overall, Little Monsters is a heartfelt, intricate, nuanced tale by Brodeur that reminds us that families are complicated and messy, the choices we make often have far-reaching consequences, and skeletons often find their way to the surface no matter how well they’re buried. The way in which Adam Stower’s illustrations perfectly complimented David Walliams’ story added an extra layer to this awesome book.

It's incredible how Brodeur manages to get so viscerally inside the bodies and hearts of so many different characters with such wide ranging professions (visual artist, real estate developer, whale expert, cop. I found it badly written and wildly irresponsible in the way that it depicted incest and sexual assault. We also share information about your use of our site with our social media, advertising and analytics partners. I don’t read a lot of literary fiction, and I dislike most of what I do read, so this one was a pleasant surprise. I was pleased that he could go back to monster school but I think he made the right choice to decide not to learn to be a monster and just be himselfI think he made the right choice to decide not to learn to be a monster and just be himself.
