About this deal

But it's also easy to picture the story happening in some kind of steampunk universe, because the world Stroud has built is entirely devoid of pop culture for our fifteen-year-old heroes to reference. For one, there are still elements of the fat-shaming Hallie mentioned in her review of the first book. Lucy and Holly’s nerves finally give way, and they break one of the most important of all psychic detection rules—Keep All Emotion Under Control.

As a fan of dark humour and horror this book works perfectly for me in both genres, although you don’t need to love horror to enjoy it as it is such a great adventure. This time, there’s a big ghost breakout in London, which seems to get worse no matter what main agencies do. She was at once submissive and assertive, her inexperience overlapping with her smooth self-confidence. The son of the wealthy owner at the time had gone crazy, stabbed a servant, and chased the injured boy up the stairs, from which he had fallen to his death. P I’m sure this will change over time and until we get there I’ll just collect every little snippet I can get.

They are immediately accosted by ghosts, and it isn’t hard to figure out these are what remains of the missing boarders of Lavender Lodge. Because until it happened, the Lockwood series read as lighter fare, creepy manifestations and nighttime horrors and deaths and all. Second, now that we know the secret that Lockwood has been hiding in that room, his mystique is all gone, leaving him quite bland. Ending the book with a twist and leaving us alone in our misery for months, until we get the sequel. Like the previous books, this one is very entertaining and has likable protagonists, humor, excellent dialogue, and plenty of creepy encounters with all sorts of ghosts.

We join our favorite agents, Lockwood, Lucy and George, as they learn to deal with the new found popularity of their agency. Who is positioned as Lucy's opponent and competition, but is immediate pals with the boys and subsequently creates a rift in the team. Ghouls and spectres, thrills and tension in this third instalment in Jonathan Stroud's bestselling series. Her name is Holly, and if you guessed that Lucy is immediately suspicious and jealous of her, you unfortunately guessed right. Holly has more to her than meets the eye though – and as with all well-written fiction, the reader should beware of making assumptions based on other characters’ viewpoints.More on the competition: That last big conversation Lucy and Holly have, where Stroud tries to show Holly's side and to paint her behavior as rational, does real disservice to the portrayal of Lucy's insight. Biasanya ini ga terlalu ketara tapi di buku ini jadi lumayan penting karena diceritakan kalo Jessica Lockwood meninggal dibunuh hantu dari Indonesia. Also Stroud pulls the same trick he pulled in The Whispering Skull where he seems to kill a character off, prompting me to think "This is upsetting, but it's also a bold storytelling move and I'll be interested to see how the series continues without this character" only to reveal that nope, they didn't die after all! Ugh, this is such a downgrade for her character to be seen as some petty love interest that makes her leave the agency at the end because she just can't handle things. The Hollow Boy had more teenage angst in it then I would like but it was still written well, and I love the skull in the jar.

Each time I picked this book up I didn't want to put it down (resulting in two very late nights, lol). A wealthy old client presents an intriguing and challenging case for the agency, which promises long awaited fame for the team. I'm not saying that you have to throw out snarky Ghostbusters jokes every few pages, Stroud, but at least give me something? Bagiku, kumis Barnes mirip sekali dengan sejenis ulat bulu eksotik, mungkin dari hutan Sumatera, yang sebelumnya tidak dikenal di dunia ilmiah.

I think The Hollow Boy dials up the series elements: there are more threads introduced that aren't wrapped up than I remember from the previous two books (though the central conflict, from a plot perspective, is resolved), and they're exciting threads.
